Morgan Thomas enters her fourth season with TCU volleyball in 2025, serving as the program's Associate Head Coach and recruiting coordinator.
A veteran of the sport, Thomas boasts 14 years of Division I coaching experience, including 12 at the Power Four conference level. While Thomas helps train all position groups, she specializes in coaching TCU's serve receive, defense and serving.
In 2024, Thomas guided the Frogs to 22 wins, tied for the fourth most in school history, and helped TCU secure its first 20-win season since 2011. It was a record-breaking year for the Frogs, who earned their first national ranking in the AVCA poll ever, went 14-1 on their home court and won a school-record 13 matches in Big 12 play. Thomas’ leadership was key in ranked wins over No. 18 Minnesota (3-2), No. 14 Baylor (3-1) and No. 23 BYU (3-2) in addition to 14 victories over AVCA top 100 teams. Her third season with the program was capped off with a third straight NCAA Tournament appearance, where it swept Hawaii in the first round.
Defensively, the Frogs ranked fourth in the Big 12 with 15.65 digs per set and fifth in total blocks with 253.0. Sarah Sylvester led the way for TCU, finishing with 146 on the season, the second most in the conference and fifth most in a single season in school history. Five Frogs also recorded at least 250 digs, led by junior outside Jalyn Gibson. At the service line, TCU’s Melanie Parra was one of the most consistent, tallying a program record 59 aces in her senior campaign.
Thomas was also influential in recruiting the No. 9 ranked class in the nation to campus, according to PrepVolleyball.com. She saw true freshman libero Alice Volpe and transfer redshirt freshman Becca Kelley earn All-Big 12 Rookie Team honors in 2024. Volpe tallied 308 digs on the year, the most by a TCU freshman since 2017, and Kelley made an instant impact for the Frogs, racking up 226 kills on the year and adding 50 blocks.
Her work with the Horned Frogs’ defense this season proved pivotal in the TCU's second straight NCAA Tournament appearance in 2023. Thomas' contributions didn't go unnoticed as she was promoted to Associate Head Coach following the season. TCU ranked third in the Big 12 with 2.54 blocks per set and saw both Sarah Sylvester (1.16) and Bri Green (1.17) rank in the Top 10 in the Big 12 in blocks per set. Additionally, the Frogs finished third in the Big 12 with 14.93 digs per set. TCU used its stellar defense in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, defeating No. 22 Florida State 3-1 on Dec. 1. Her recruiting reach also helped the Horned Frogs land a pair of impact transfers for the 2023 season. Thomas was influential in recruiting Green, as well as Melanie Parra. Parra recorded one of the best single seasons in program history and capped off her spectacular season garnering AVCA Third Team All-American honors. The unanimous First Team All-Big 12 selection garnered AVCA National Player of the Week honors (Sept. 19) and was a two-time Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week. She broke the all-time single season points record with 569 and broke the four-set school record with 34 kills in a single match.
Her work with the Horned Frogs enabled TCU to enjoy a historic 2022 campaign. Thomas guided TCU to a 17-11 overall record, program best 11 Big 12 victories and helped the program notch its first-ever third place finish in the conference standings. She also helped the Horned Frogs post their first-ever undefeated home record in Big 12 play, finish with a final NCAA RPI ranking of No. 39 – the highest in school history – and produce the biggest turnaround season of any Power Five program. TCU enjoyed the largest year-over-year win improvement of any team, more than doubling its overall win tally and more than quintupling its conference wins from the season prior.
Thomas’ postseason pedigree proved an invaluable asset for TCU in her first season with the program. With Thomas in an assistant coaching role, the Horned Frogs notched their first NCAA Tournament berth in six years, advancing to the Round of 32 following an opening round win over Washington.
Thomas arrived in Fort Worth following a year-long stint as a volunteer assistant at national power Pitt in 2021. There, she helped lead the Panthers to a 30-4 record, an NCAA Final Four berth and a No. 3 ranking in the AVCA coaches’ poll. Prior to moving to western Pennsylvania, Thomas enjoyed a five-year tenure at Texas Tech, where she ascended from an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator (2016-2017) to associate head coach (2018-2020). Thomas worked primarily with the Red Raiders’ middle blockers and defense while leading recruiting efforts.
She was the recipient of the prestigious AVCA Thirty Under 30 Award in 2019 following her third season in Lubbock. Thomas is an active member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association, serving as a member of the AVCA Match Point Mentoring Program starting in 2018 and has represented both the Big 12 and Southland Conferences as a representative on the AVCA Assistant Coaches’ Committee from 2015-20. Additionally, she served on the College Coach Advisory Board for the Junior Volleyball Recruiting Association (JVRA) from 2019-20.
Thomas has made a name for herself on the recruiting trail, bringing in Top 60 recruiting classes in 2019, 2020 and 2021. Her skills as a talent developer have helped her coach 17 All-Conference, four AVCA All-Region and one AVCA All-American student-athlete throughout her 11 years of coaching.
Her work with Tech’s front line helped the Red Raiders to three consecutive winning seasons from 2017 to 2019. She directly guided two student-athletes to All-Big 12 honors (Katy Keenan – Second Team All-Big 12 (2018) and Lauren Douglass – Second Team All-Big 12 and AVCA All-Southwest Region Honorable Mention (2017). She helped recruit and mentor All Big 12 team selections Brooke Kanas, Caitlin Dugan and Samantha Sanders while at Tech, helping TTU achieve its highest conference finish in program history in 2019 (5th) while also aiding the Red Raiders to their most Big 12 wins since 2002.
Prior to her arrival at Texas Tech, Thomas spent two years as an assistant coach at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, where she helped the Islanders to their best season in school history in 2015 at 31-5 overall with a spotless 16-0 mark in conference play. The squad captured the Southland Conference regular season and tournament crowns, securing the first NCAA Tournament berth in program history. The Islanders finished their 2015 season with four First-Team All-Southland Conference performers and two Southland Conference Players of the Year.
She began working with the Islanders in May of 2014 and was promoted to first assistant coach in January 2015. Thomas arrived to TAMUCC after spending two years as the graduate assistant for the University of South Carolina.
Thomas landed her first job as the Graduate Assistant for the South Carolina Indoor Volleyball program in July of 2012. Under head coach Scott Swanson, Thomas was responsible for coordinating and directing community service initiatives for student-athletes, while assisting with team travel, summer camps, and managing the program's Under Armour account.
In addition to her role with the Indoor program, Thomas assisted in the development of South Carolina's Beach Volleyball program as the Director of Beach Volleyball Operations. During her time under head coach Moritz Moritz, Thomas oversaw the total operations of home events, while working closely with the coaching staff with on-campus recruiting efforts, team travel, and budget management.
Thomas was a four-year starter for the University of South Carolina-Upstate and a standout middle blocker. She set numerous school records, including career kills at 1,049 and career blocks with 315. The former team captain also was the first All-Atlantic Sun Conference selection in program history in 2011.
Off the court, Thomas served as a marketing intern in the athletics department, while being highly involved on the Executive Board on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). Additionally, she helped incoming students transition into college as a University 101 Peer Leader.
In addition to her college experience, Thomas served as head coach for Corpus Christi Force Volleyball Club from 2014-2016, Magnum Volleyball Club in Columbia, South Carolina from 2012-2014, and Upward Stars in Spartanburg, South Carolina from 2008-2012.
She graduated from USC-Upstate in 2012 with a Bachelor's degree in Communication Studies and a minor in Sociology before earning her Master's degree in Sport and Entertainment Management from the University of South Carolina in 2014.
Thomas attended St. Thomas Aquinas High School and played for the Boomers Volleyball Club from 2005-2008.
A native of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Thomas married her husband, Justin, in July 2021. The two welcomed a son, Wyatt, in August of 2023.
