TCU junior is tied for third after shooting a three-under 69 in opening round
CARLSBAD, Calif. – Kirstin Angosta carried her red-hot form to southern California and is poised to challenge for a national title.
The TCU junior fired a three-under 69 in the round one of the NCAA D1 Women's Golf Championship on Friday at Omni La Costa Resort and Spa.
Angosta carded six birdies – tied for the most of any competitor in the 156-player field – and is tied for third following the first day of play.
The Las Vegas native teed off with the early groups on the front nine. She began her day with a birdie on the first green and shaved another stroke off her scorecard on hole four. A trio of bogeys between holes nine through 12 brought Angosta back to even par.
From there, Angosta steadied and closed hard. She picked up a birdie on three of her final five holes, including back-to-back on 16 and 17. Angosta signed for a two-under 34 on the second nine.
She will start Saturday's second round just one stroke back of co-leaders Megha Ganne (Stanford) and Ellie Bushnell (Oklahoma State).
Angosta, who played her final two years of prep golf at Coppell High School, was one of 21 players to finish under par. She tops the field in par-4 scoring (-4, 3.60).
Angosta is the first TCU player to shoot in the 60's at Nationals. She broke TCU's program records for low round and low-18 vs. par.
She notched her third consecutive sub-70 round and 11th of her career with the performance. Angosta has now scored par or better in seven of her last 13 rounds played dating back to the Charles Schwab Women's Collegiate Invitational in March.
The standout start has Angosta in solid shape to advance to the final round of the stroke play portion of the NCAA Championships. The nine highest-placing individuals on non-advancing teams play a final 18 holes on Monday to determine the NCAA Individual Champion.
Angosta will begin round two on the back nine and tee off at 4:02 p.m. CT on Saturday.
