Frogs earn second straight win to open Big 12 play
MANHATTAN, Kan. – A late goal from Sydney Becerra in the 83rd minute of action lifted the No. 10 TCU women's soccer team over Kansas State, 1-0 on Thursday night at Buser Family Park.
THE RUNDOWN
The Horned Frogs (8-1, 2-0 Big 12) secured the advantage in every offensive category throughout the first half but did not score a goal to show for it. TCU earned 10 shots with three of those being on goal, five corners and numerous chances within the Wildcat's back half. The Frog's defense was also on point, holding Kansas State to only two shots in the first half while dominating the possession time.
Highly touted transfer Katana Norman appeared in a match for the first time in her TCU career in the 35th minute, and her spark along with a couple other substitutions provided an emphatic jolt off the bench in the closing minutes heading into the half with the score still level at 0-0.
The second half had more of an even feel than the first, as both teams posted numerous chances and Kansas State tallied two more shots than TCU across the final 45 minutes. A plethora of tactical subs from the Frogs kept the team fresh and hoped to bring enough intensity to push across a score. However, for the first 38 minutes of action in the second frame, both teams could not capitalize off their chances.
In the 83rd minute, TCU finally struck gold. AJ Hennessey passed the ball down to Sydney Becerra, who was able to dribble through Kansas State's back half unmarked. The Flower Mound, Texas, then unleashed a blast from close to 25 yards outside the box, shooting it perfectly over the goalie's outstretched arms to give the Frogs another set of late-game heroics.
After Becerra's goal, the final minutes of action lived up to the same energetic feel from earlier in the game. Despite a very physical and intense final six minutes, TCU was able to hold onto the lead and come out victorious.
Kira Ybarra notched four clutch saves in her shutout performance against the Wildcats.
QUOTES OF THE GAME
Overall thoughts on the game…
"It was a good performance by our group overall. It's hard to win on the road, and we were able to come away with a 1-0 victory. I'm pretty pleased with the performance by a lot of people, especially people off the bench came in and kept the level high, especially in the first half. I'm glad to win on the road, go 1-0 today and look forward to Kansas on Sunday."
On securing the fifth game-winning goal in the 80th minute or later so far this season…
"We are resilient. I grew up in the 1980s with the Cleveland Browns, Brian Sipe and the Kardiac Kids, and this is kind of what it feels like. We find a way to win at the end of the game, and I have heart palpitations at the end of the game. It's like, 'Come on guys, we can do this.' Somehow, we figure out a way. I don't' like it. I don't like that we're trending in that direction, but if we're able to do it and win the game then that's the most important thing."
