Gibson records 10+ kills for 50th time in her career
PITTSBURGH – Opening the 2025 season at the State Farm College Volleyball Showcase, No. 25 TCU fell to No. 3 Pitt in four sets on Sunday afternoon at PPG Paints Arena.
The Horned Frogs (0-1, 0-0 Big 12) had their chances, but a hungry Pitt (1-2, 0-0 ACC) team held off late comeback attempts to earn its first win of the season. For TCU, it marked the first of five matches against ranked opponents to start the 2025 campaign.
Jalyn Gibson led the Frogs with 18 kills on a .471 clip. It marked the senior captain's 50th career match with double-digit kills. Lauren Murphy shined in her TCU debut. The Ohio State transfer has an extremely efficient afternoon, finishing with 10 kills on 14 swings (.571).
The match had extra meaning for sophomore Becca Kelley, who lined up across the net from her sister Bre, who plays for Pitt. The Kelley sisters battled at the net. Becca finished with six kills and a block, while Bre tallied three kills and seven blocks.
TCU and Pitt split the first two sets to start the afternoon. Gibson fittingly picked up the first two kills of the match and the season for the Frogs. TCU and Pitt traded points in the early going until the Panthers found separation, going on a 6-0 run through the media timeout. Trailing 11-17, Gibson helped the Frogs side out and sparked a 7-1 run with a kill and an ace to tie the set up at 18. Pitt went on another late 4-0 run to earn set point and survived as TCU clawed back within one to take the opening set.
The Frogs responded in the second. After both teams battled for the lead, it was TCU who strung together four unanswered points, three of which came off swings by Murphy, to take a 12-9 lead. The Frogs never relinquished the lead from there, evening the match at one set apiece with a 25-22 set victory.
Pitt jumped out to a 10-5 advantage in the third. TCU tried to climb back into things, but the Panthers outhit the Frogs .419 to .094 to take the set 25-15.
Looking to extend the match, TCU hung with Pitt through most of the fourth set. Tied through the first 18 points, a small 3-0 run proved to be the spark Pitt needed to close out the match and hold off the Frogs.
TCU is back in action on Monday, Sept. 1, taking on No. 2 Penn State. First serve is set for 4 p.m. CT on FOX.
