Abeldt is Frogs top pick in the fifth round
FORT WORTH – Ben Abeldt headlined a group of four TCU baseball players selected on Day 2 of the 2025 MLB First Year Player Draft.
Ben Abeldt was the first Horned Frog drafted, going to Texas in the fifth round (146th overall). Anthony Silva was drafted in the 14th round (432nd overall), going to the Cleveland Guardians. Four picks later, Caedmon Parker was the first selection in the 15th round (436th overall) by the Chicago White Sox. Braeden Sloan was the final Frog drafted, going in the 17th round (514thoverall) to the Baltimore Orioles.
Abeldt, a unanimous preseason All-Big 12 selection, was tabbed a preseason All-American by the NCBWA (1st Team) and Perfect Game (2nd Team). He was also named the Preseason Pitcher of the Year by Baseball America before an injury at the start of spring practice derailed his junior campaign.
In two seasons at TCU, Abeldt was 6-4 with a 2.81 ERA in 58 appearances. He racked up 125 strikeouts in 99 1/3 innings of work and limited opponents to a .215 batting average. A two-time USA Baseball Collegiate National Team member, Abeldt was a 2024 All-America selection by various publications in addition to earning first-team all-conference accolades.
Silva, an honorable mention all-Big 12 performer this season, started 56 games as part of 59 appearances on the season. He totaled 60 hits on the year with 10 doubles, one triple and six home runs while driving in 38.
For his career, Silva hit .296 and appeared in 171 games with 168 starts, all at shortstop. He racked up 186 hits with 31 doubles, one triple and 17 home runs to go along with 121 RBIs. He stole 40 career bases and produced a career .379 on-base percentage. He is a two-time All-Big 12 performer in addition to being a freshman All-American.
Parker, who returned for his redshirt junior campaign after being an 11th round draft pick in 2024, had a solid campaign. He started 12 games as part of 13 appearances on the year. He went 3-2 with 35 strikeouts in 50 innings of work while limiting opponents to a .268 average.
In his career, Parker was 8-5 with 23 starts as part of 39 appearances. He posted a 4.95 ERA with 99 strikeouts in 111 innings of work. Opponents hit just .249 off the right-hander.
Sloan was a mainstay out of the bullpen this past season, appearing in 17 games. He went 3-4 on the year with three saves and posted a 4.14 ERA. He ranked third on the team with 58 1/3 innings pitched and second with 76 strikeouts. He limited opponents to a .203 batting average.
For his career, Sloan made 14 starts as part of 44 appearances. He won nine games and tallied four saves. He totaled 147 strikeouts in 124 career innings and held opponents to a .244 average.
Since Kirk Saarloos' arrival on campus prior to the 2013 season, TCU has had 72 draft picks by 23 different organizations. TCU has produced 28 Top 10 round draft picks, including three first round selections, in Saarloos' tenure.
