Nine Horned Frogs honored by league coaches
FORT WORTH – TCU baseball's Sawyer Strosnider was named the Big12's Freshman of the Year. A total of nine Horned Frogs were honored in a vote by league coaches.
Strosnider was also voted a first-team all-conference performer joined by fellow freshman Noah Franco and sophomore Tommy LaPour. Karson Bowen, Chase Brunson and Nolan Traeger were named to the second-team. Mason Brassfield, Kade Eudy and Anthony Silva were named Honorable Mention All-Big 12.
TCU had a record five freshman selected to the 12-person All-Freshman squad. In addition to earning all-conference recognition, Brassfield, Eudy, Franco, Strosnider and Traeger were voted to the all-freshman team.
Strosnider is the eighth Horned Frog to earn league Freshman of the Year accolades. He is the fourth to be honored in the Big 12 joining Connor Wanhanen (2015), Luken Baker (2016) and Brayden Taylor (2021). Franco and Strosnider are the first freshmen Horned Frogs to earn first-team all-conference honors since Luken Baker in 2016.
Franco sits third on the team with a .330 average. Of his 65 hits, he boasts a team-leading 15 doubles, one triple and 10 home runs to go along with 45 RBIs. In league play, Franco hit .358 with 10 doubles, seven home runs and a team-high 35 RBIs.
LaPour has been a dominating force as a starter this season. He ranks fourth in the Big 12 with a 3.11 ERA over 14 starts. Earlier this season, LaPour put together a stretch of six consecutive quality starts. He leads the team in wins (7), innings pitched (81.0) and strikeouts (77) while limiting opponents to a .232 average. In league play, LaPour was 6-0 with a 2.98 ERA. In 60 1/3 innings of work, he fanned 62 and limited opponents to a .230 average.
Strosnider leads the team with a .360 average, 72 hits, has tied a single-season school record with nine triples and 50 RBIs. He ranks second on the team with 12 and 10 home runs. He was also TCU's leading hitter in Big 12 play with a .374 average that included seven doubles, seven triples, eight home runs and 31 RBIs.
Bowen sits second on the team with a .333 average. Of his 53 hits on the year, he has tallied 11 doubles, three triples and four home runs to go along with 28 RBIs. In league play, he hit .340 with eight doubles, one triple, two home runs and 19 RBIs.
Brunson has reached base safely in 52 of 53 games played this season. He sits fourth on the squad with a .328 average. His 67 hits are second on the team while his 11 doubles are tied for third. He leads the team with 12 home runs and is tied for second with 45 RBIs. In league play, Brunson ranked second on the team with a .371 average. He had seven doubles, one triple and nine home runs to go along with 26 RBIs.
Traeger owns a .326 average this season. Of his 47 hits, he has eight doubles, three triples and three home runs. In league play, Traeger hit .323 with five doubles, two triples and a home run. Of his 16 RBIs on the season, 12 have come in Big 12 play.
Brassfield has turned in a solid season on the mound, serving as both a starting pitcher and a long reliever. He has started five games as part of 16 appearances. He boasts a 5-1 record to go along with a 3.59 ERA. His 57 2/3 innings pitched rank second on the team, while his 62 strikeouts are third. In Big 12 play, he was 3-1 with a 4.54 ERA. He started four games as part of 10 appearances. In 41 2/3 innings pitched, he fanned 44.
Eudy led the team with six saves, three of which came in league play. He has appeared in 19 games and has a 1-1 record to go along with a 3.80 ERA. In 23 2/3 innings of work, he has fanned 20. Eudy had a 1.93 ERA in 11 appearances during Big 12 play.
Silva is hitting .281 on the year with 10 doubles, one triple and six home runs to go a long with 37 RBIs. He sits second on the team with 10 stolen bases. In league play, he hit .391 with four doubles, one triple and four home runs while driving in 26.
TCU opens play in the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. The Frogs enter the tournament as the No. 3 seed. They will play the winner of Wednesday's No. 6 Kansas State vs. No. 11 Houston contest. Thursday's game will be televised on ESPNU and ESPN+.
