
TCU Javelin Shines on Day One of Big 12 Championships

Irene Jepkemboi and Preston Kuznof win gold
LAWRENCE, Kan. – TCU's javelin group kicked off the Big 12 Championships with a bang on Thursday at Rock Chalk Park, collecting a combined 28 points between the men and the women. Irene Jepkemboi and Preston Kuznof led the way as each were crowned conference champions.
Just a true freshman, Kuznof won the men's javelin throw with a mark of 68.32m (224-2). Coming into the meet, he led the conference in the event and backed it up with a gold medal winning performance. He also earned 10 points for the men who sit in fifth heading into Friday.
Jepkemboi successfully defended her title in the women's javelin throw, finishing with a mark of 57.59m (188-11). The sophomore has dominated the event at the conference and national level as she ranks inside the top 10 in the NCAA this season. Her teammate, Maria Bienvenu placed third overall, throwing 52.92m (173-7). She took home six points for the team along with her bronze medal. Sydney Juszczyk rounded out the scoring for the Frogs with three points and a sixth-place result. In total, the javelin trio scored 19 points to give TCU the lead in the women's team standings.
In the multis, Elise Dobson and Yannik Knobloch had strong first days of competition. Dobson sits in fifth in the women's heptathlon through four events with 3,244 points. The junior earned top 10 finishes in the 100m hurdles (14.41, seventh), shot put (11.80m, fifth) and a PR in the high jump, clearing 1.69m (second). Knobloch ranks second in the men's decathlon standings at the half way point with 4,162 points. He won the shot put (14.69m) and finished inside the top seven in all five events, including a PR in the high jump, shot put and 400m.
Six other Frogs advanced to the finals in their respective events. Kashie Crockett qualified in sixth with a time of 20.64. On the women's side, Indya Mayberry cruised to a season best 22.94, the fourth fastest time in school history. She ranks second heading into the 200m final and is joined by teammate Iyana Gray who ranks fourth with a 23.11.
Hurdler Jayden Douglas broke his own school record for the second time this season. The sophomore became the first Horned Frog to break 50 seconds in the 400m hurdles, running a 49.99 to take the No. 2 spot in the men's final. Amelliah Birdow (fourth, 57.52) and Tia Williams (ninth, 57.97) also punched their ticket to the final for the women.
TCU looks to continue its momentum heading into Day Two on Friday, May 16.
