Sloan tosses five shutout innings
FORT WORTH – TCU scored five unanswered runs to rally for a 5-4 win over Fresno State Saturday afternoon at Lupton Stadium. The Horned Frogs scored three times in the seventh to complete the comeback. Braeden Sloan tossed five scoreless innings in relief.
The Rundown
Breaden Sloan (2-0) out of the bullpen did yeoman's work, allowing the Horned Frogs to stage the comeback. He battled runners on base in all but one inning, but wiggled off the hook each time. He finished the night allowing five hits and striking out seven.
Fresno State built a 4-0 lead, scoring twice in each of the second and third innings. A lead-off double scored on a double play ball to give the Bulldogs the lead. Back-to-back two out hits around a stolen base made it 2-0. In the third, a ball deflected over the fence in right center for a two-run home run.
The comeback started with two outs in the fourth. Nolan Traeger reached on a two out pop up that fell just out of reach of a charging shortstop. Anthony Silva made the missed catch hurt as he lined a two-run home run over the center field fence to cut the deficit in half.
Sloan found himself in trouble in the seventh with runners on the corners and nobody out. The Bulldogs ultimately left the bases loaded as Sloan got a pop up, a strikeout and a ground out to escape the inning.
The momentum carried into the bottom of the inning as TCU struck for three runs to take its first lead of the game. Sam Myers was hit by a pitch to open the inning. He moved to third on a Sawyer Strosnider base hit and scored on a balk to make it a 4-3 game. Isaac Cadena tied the game with a base hit. A wild pitch allowed Colton Griffin to score the game-winning run.
Tommy LaPour started for the Frogs and allowed four runs on six hits. He struck out three in the no-decision.
