FORT WORTH – No. 16 TCU left no doubt, making quick work of West Virginia in a sweep victory on Sunday afternoon at Schollmaier Arena.
The Horned Frogs (18-7, 8-5 Big 12) dominated the Mountaineers (14-10, 2-10 Big 12) to improve to 12-1 on their home court this season. For the second straight match, the TCU offense hit over .300, posting a .327 mark against WVU. The sophomore duo of Evan Hendrix and Becca Kelley paced the Frogs with 13 kills each.
TCU also saw success at the service line, racking up nine aces, its most in conference play this season. Alice Volpe and Ella Foti led the cause with three apiece.
Senior middle blocker Sarah Sylvester also continued her climb in the record books. The Livonia, Michigan, native passed Allison Lynch (445, 2013-16) for second on the TCU all-time blocks list. She now has 449 in her career.
From the opening point, the Frogs never trailed in the first set. Kelley sparked an early 7-0 run that featured a pair of aces by Volpe to go up 11-3. TCU continued to pour it on, leading by as many as 12 at 23-11. Freshman McKenzie Berg came off the bench to give the Frogs set point, and a service error handed TCU a 25-16 victory.
Things were much closer in the second as both teams traded points well beyond the media timeout. Tied at 17, TCU broke through with a 4-1 run and forced the Mountaineers to call a timeout. WVU responded to tie the set back up at 24 all, but a block by Alexis Roberson and a kill from Hendrix quickly finished off the set 26-24.
Looking to put away the win, TCU stormed out to a 12-4 lead in the third set. The Frogs kept pushing the lead to double-digits at 20-10 and later 12 points, which would be the final margin as Riley Weigelt secured a late ace and a WVU error wrapped up the sweep for TCU.
The Frogs hit the road for two ranked matches next week. TCU first travels to Boulder to take on No. 20 Colorado on Nov. 13 before heading to Ames for a date with No. 24 Iowa State on Nov. 15.
