FORT WORTH – No. 9 TCU vanquished the ghosts of Baylor and signaled a new era in the regional rivalry on Sunday.
The Horned Frogs earned a wire-to-wire 80-75 victory over the 25th-ranked Bears in front of 5,415 fans inside Schollmaier Arena.
The win was TCU's first over Baylor since 1990, halting a 37-game, 35-year losing streak to the perennial power.
TCU (20-2, 8-1 Big 12) now occupies sole possession of first place in the Big 12 standings at the midpoint of conference play for the first time ever.
Sedona Prince, Madison Conner and Hailey Van Lith combined for 64 points in a game the Horned Frogs never trailed. TCU led for 38:31 in the nationally televised affair and by as many as 22 midway through the third quarter.
An 8-2 Baylor run rendered TCU's edge down to a single possession, 76-73, with 26 seconds to go. Van Lith knocked down two free throws following the subsequent inbound with Baylor (16-5, 6-2 Big 12) pressed to foul. Up 79-75 with less than 10 seconds remaining, TCU forced Sarah Andrews, who led the Bears with 21 points, into an errant 3-point attempts to seal the win.
Prince notched her school record seventh straight 20-point game, leading all players with 24 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks. She overtook TCU Athletics Hall of Famer Sandora Irvin ('04) for the longest consecutive 20-point streak. Prince notched her 10th double-double of the season and fifth in Big 12 play.
Conner scored 21 buoyed by a 4-8 clip from downtown. The 5-11 guard also snagged a career-high eight rebounds.
Van Lith finished with 19 points, including a team-leading seven in the final frame. Van Lith, an 83 percent shooter at the foul line, matched her season percentage in the fourth, knocking down 5-6 attempts from the stripe.
Agnes Emma-Nnopu gave TCU four players in double figures and two with double-doubles, netting 12 points along with 10 boards.
Sunday's game was the first 'ranked vs. ranked' battle to unfold between the rivals inside Schollmaier Arena. And TCU immediately illustrated the outcome would be different this time around.
The Horned Frogs raced out to a 9-0 lead just over three minutes into the game behind consecutive 3-pointers from Van Lith and Conner.
TCU gave the ball away nine times in the first quarter, but it didn't matter. The Frogs assumed a 17-6 advantage at the 2:31 mark in the period. TCU shot 4-5 behind the arc and outrebounded the Bears 13-4.
Prince took over in the second quarter, pairing all 10 of her first half points with six rebounds. TCU closed the quarter with 3-pointers from Conner and Van Lith to take a 42-31 lead into the locker room.
Emma-Nnopu scored 11 points in the first half, drilling all three of her 3-point attempts over the game's first dozen minutes. Van Lith pitched in an identical tally.
TCU more than doubled up the Bears on the glass 27-11 and converted 7-10 attempts from distance in the first half.
A 13-2 run over the first five minutes out of the locker room staked TCU to its largest lead of the afternoon at 55-33. Prince accounted for eight of TCU's points, bookending the spurt with a pair of and-one finishes.
Baylor whittled the deficit down to 13 entering the fourth.
Conner kept the Bears at bay. Her fourth-and-final 3-pointer kept TCU comfortably in front, 71-57, with seven minutes to play. A driving layup at the 2:19 mark provided all the remaining cushion TCU needed, maintaining the Frogs' double-digit lead at 75-65.
TCU committed just four turnovers in the second half. Conner, Prince, Van Lith and Donovyn Hunter dished out three assists apiece.
The Horned Frogs shot an efficient 52 percent (27-52) from the field and finished 9-15 behind the arc.
