Is the ninth time she has represented Team USA at the event
GAINESVILLE, Va. – Angela Stanford is set for her ninth Solheim Cup appearance.
Stanford, the most decorated player in TCU women's golf history, will serve as an assistant captain for Team USA at the 2024 Solheim Cup, held from Sept. 12-15 at Robert Trent Jones golf Club in Gainesville, Va.
It marks the third time the TCU Athletics Hall of Famer has been selected for captaincy at the Solheim Cup. Stanford was first tabbed an assistant captain in 2021 and reprised her role in 2023.
The Solheim Cup is the women's professional golf equivalent to the Ryder Cup. The biennial event features team match play competition between 12 players from the Ladies European Tour (LET) and 12 United States players from the Ladies Professional Golf Association Tour (LPGA).
Stanford was a member of six U.S. Solheim Cup teams as a player; 2003, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013, and 2015. She helped lead the Americans to repeat victories in 2007 2009 and once more in 2015, where in the penultimate match, she defeated Suzann Pettersen, which cleared the way for Paula Creamer to score the winning point, and gave the U.S. Its first Solheim Cup triumph since 2009.
"Some of my favorite Solheim moments have happened when we were trying to win the Cup in Europe," Stanford said. "In 2007, we played amazing and won. Then, in 2015, we had a historic comeback to win the Cup. I love being part of a team and playing for the U.S. is the highest honor there is in sports."
Stanford has also made two Lexus Cup appearances. She first starred on the international stage in 2000 upon her graduation from TCU, when she guided the United States to Curtis Cup victory as an amateur.
Since turning professional, Stanford has won seven times on the LPGA Tour, with her most recent victory coming at the 2020 Volunteers of America Classic. She has amassed 95 top ten finishes in LPGA tournaments and ranks 11th on the LPGA Career Money List. Stanford won her first major title at the Evian Championship on Sept. 16, 2018, in Evian-Les Baines, France.
