Two Horned Frogs to compete in main singles and doubles draws
TULSA, Okla. – Duncan Chan took a major step toward breaking into the ITA singles rankings at the conclusion of the fall season.
Chan commenced TCU's participation at the ITA All-American Championships with a pair of prequalifying singles victories.
The sophomore picked up his first career ranked win on Saturday, rallying past No. 122 Logan Zapp of North Carolina, 6-4, 6-7 (3), 6-2. Chan then snared a second straight three-set win over a Power Four conference player on Sunday. He took down Vanderbilt's Henry Ruger, 1-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3, improving his career singles record to 14-9.
Chan is 6-2 all-time in three-set matches.
He ultimately came one match short of advancing to the qualifying draw. Chan fell to South Carolina's Sean Daryabeigi, 3-6, 1-6, Sunday afternoon.
From Markham, Ontario, Chan now sports a 6-3 combined overall record through two fall invitationals.
Filip Apltauer also played a pair of prequalifying singles matches, coming up short in both affairs.
Chan and Apltauer will next be in action at the US College Cup Invitational on Friday-Sunday in Torreon, Mexico, alongside fellow sophomores Julian Alonso and Kaj Quirijns. The tournament will feature hidden dual play between the Horned Frogs, Arizona State, Rice and Abilene Christian. The Us College Cup Invitational was incepted by TCU head coach David Roditi in 2023 as means of increasing the visibility of college tennis abroad and giving developing players an opportunity to play an increased number of fall matches.
The ITA All-American Championships continue on Wednesday with the start of the main singles and doubles draws. Pedro Vives and Lui Maxted are competing in singles and doubles. Vives and Maxted, tabbed 37th and 39th, respectively, in the preseason ITA rankings, were automatic qualifiers in singles. They received a main draw wild card as a doubles pair. Vives became an NCAA All-American in doubles in 2023. Maxted has reached Fall Nationals in doubles every year since beginning his college career in 2021.
