Angosta leads Horned Frogs with a four-under 66; in sole possession of third place
NORMAN, Okla. – TCU is set up to contend for the team and individual titles at the Schooner Fall Classic after 18 holes.
The Horned Frogs occupy third place on the strength of a four-under 66 from Kirstin Angosta in Saturday's opening round at Belmar Golf Club.
Her efforts propelled the Frogs to a collective three-under 277 on the par-70 course. TCU is four shots back of tournament leader Auburn – No. 6 in the 2023-24 final Scoreboard team rankings – and is one stroke shy of a tie for second with Houston.
Angosta is a solo third, trailing only Auburn's Anna Davis (-6) and Alexandra Rivera of Iowa State (-5).
The Horned Frogs' first round score is tied for the seventh-best low round score in program history. TCU, which has teed it up annually at the Oklahoma-hosted Schooner Fall Classic since 2019 and eight times total, notched its second-lowest team 18-hole tally on the grounds of Belmar Golf Club. The mark is second only to TCU's school record low round score of 268, set in round three of the 2022 Schooner.
TCU teed off on hole one alongside the Tigers and Cyclones. The Horned Frogs played even-par golf on the par-36 front nine. Sitting a solo fifth, TCU then carded 12 of its 17 birdies over its final nine holes to ascend past Iowa State (279, -1) and Wisconsin (282, +2) into third place.
Angosta, along with Camille Min-Gaultier and Meagan Winans, bagged three birdies apiece on the back nine.
Gracie McGovern and Sofia Barroso Sá gave TCU three players in the top-20 of the individual leaderboard. Both players shot an even-par 70 and are gridlocked for 16th.
Min-Gaultier (+1, 71) and Winans (+2, 72) are tied for 28th and 37th.
McGovern and Min-Gaultier notched collegiate low round personal records as did Angosta.
Angosta was five-under for the round after recording her lone bogey on hole one. Her five birdies were the most of any competitor in the 90-player field. The sophomore has finished under-par in three of her last four rounds on the heels of a runner-up finish at the Bettie Lou Evans Invitational on Sept. 11.
Both McGovern and Barroso Sá were bogey-free on the back nine. McGovern collected consecutive birdies on 10 and 11 and parred her remaining seven holes. Barroso Sá closed strong with a birdie at 17. She has turned in a countable score in every round this fall and in 70-71 of her career rounds played.
Min-Gaultier has scored a 71 in two of her last three rounds played. She matched McGovern with back-to-back birdies on 10 and 11 and added a third to her first round tally alongside Angosta and Barroso Sá on 17.
