Big block leads Horned Frogs to sixth straight win
FORT WORTH – It was a block party in Schollmaier Arena as No. 23 TCU volleyball registered 12 blocks to sweep Denver on Friday night.
Six different Horned Frogs (7-2, 0-0 Big 12) got in on the action, led by Sarah Sylvester and Becca Kelley. They finished with six and five, respectively, including three solo stuffs. A strong presence at the net helped TCU dominate Denver on the offensive side, outhitting the Pioneers .359 to .113. It marks the fourth time in the last five matches that the Frogs have hit over .300.
Jalyn Gibson and Kelley led the attack, finishing with 11 kills each on clips of .400 or better. TCU also saw strong production from its middles, Alexis Roberson and Sylvester, who combined for 11 kills on just 17 swings.
Despite a slow start in the opening set, the Frogs found their footing and took care of business. Denver scored four of the first five points before TCU used an 8-1 run to grab the lead at 10-6. Melanie Parra and Kelley fueled the Frogs with big swings, helping build up an eight-point advantage that they would hold the rest of the set. A Pioneer error closed out a 25-17 first set to give TCU a 1-0 lead.
Once again, the Frogs fell behind early in the second. Trailing 1-4 and 5-8, TCU patiently chipped away. A Cecily Bramschreiber ace put the Frogs in front by one, and a few points later, back-to-back kills by Kelley and Sylvester helped spark a 5-1 scoring burst to put TCU up 15-11 at the media break. Gibson, Kelley and a big block helped the Frogs cruise through the final 10 points and inch closer to victory with a 25-20 set win.
Looking to close things out, TCU doubled up Denver at 8-4, forcing the Pioneers to burn an early timeout. Just when Denver cut the lead back to two, Gibson and the Frogs began to pour it on, taking a 10-point lead, the largest of the night at 22-12. Sylvester finished things off with the final two kills to help TCU pick up its fourth sweep in the last five matches and sixth win in a row.
The Frogs close out their non-conference slate on Saturday, Sept. 21, against Rice at 5 p.m. CT.
