Horned Frogs in action in two fall invitationals on Friday
SAN FRANCISCO – Duncan Chan and Lui Maxted kickstarted the Horned Frogs' 2024-25 campaign with a trio of victories in the opening round of the Battle in the Bay Classic on Thursday.
Chan accounted for two of the TCU triumphs at the California Tennis Club.
He collected TCU's first win of the 2024-25 campaign in doubles action. The sophomore partnered with Danial Rakhmatullayev of Michigan State on an 8-5 defeat of Arizona's Oskar Jansson and Zoran Ludoski.
The Markham, Ontario native then rolled to a 6-3, 6-3 takedown of UC Davis' Ryan Torres to commence the 32-player singles draw.
Lui Maxted capped the Frogs' first day in San Francisco with an efficient 6-2, 6-1 win over the Spartans' Matthew Forbes.
All doubles matches in the tournament are contested as 8-point pro sets. The short scoring format saw Maxted and Pedro Vives contract the upset bug. The senior duo fell to Brunkow and Dominique Rolland in a 10-point tiebreak, 8-7 (4).
Maxted and Vives played their first match together since their freshman campaigns in 2021. They entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed in the 16-pair bracket.
Brunkow edged Vives, No. 37 in the preseason ITA singles rankings, 7-6 (2), 7-5.
Chan and Rakhmatullayev move on to face No. 2 seed Kenta Miyoshi and Karlis Ozolins of Illinois in Friday's quarterfinals.
Chan improved his career doubles record to 28-16 overall and 12-6 in fall invitationals.
Maxted, ranked 39th nationally, is now two singles wins shy of 50 for his career. He'll battle Pepperdine's Chris Papa in the round of 16. The quarterfinals take place on Friday evening, with Maxted matched up with either Jansson or Savriyan Danilov (San Diego) with a victory vs. Papa
Chan gets the ultimate test on Friday. His second round assignment is the nation's No. 1 ranked player, Ozan Baris of Michigan State.
Day two commences at 11 a.m. with quarterfinal doubles.
Both Chan and Maxted's round of 16 singles matches are slated for a 1 p.m. first serve.
