Horned Frogs take title by 12-stroke margin; Angosta finishes as runner-up
NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. – TCU women's golf had never visited the state of Kentucky as a Big 12 member prior to this week.
Following the Horned Frogs' stay in the greater Lexington area, frequent treks to the Bluegrass State may be on the docket for future seasons.
TCU claimed its first team championship in six seasons, winning the 31st Bettie Lou Evans Invitational on Tuesday at Champion Trace at Keene Trace Golf Club.
The Horned Frogs posted consecutive even-par rounds over the final 36 holes to finish seven-over (295-288-288 = 871) in securing the title.
"So proud of this team," said head coach Angie Ravaioli-Larkin. "In such a short amount of time so early in the season, they truly love one another. They played with so much grit and confidence all week. It was so cool to see."
It was a wire-to-wire victory for TCU. The Horned Frogs finished 12 strokes ahead of second-place and tournament host Kentucky. TCU led following the conclusion of each round in the 54-hole, three-day affair and took a six-shot lead into Tuesday morning.
Ravaioli-Larkin won her 19th tournament championship in 31 seasons as TCU's head coach.
The triumph marks TCU's 53rd all-time tournament title.
TCU was led by sophomore Kirstin Angosta, who finished as the outright runner-up at three-under (213).
Sofia Barroso Sá gave the Horned Frogs two in the top-three, as she tied for third behind an even-par 216.
Angosta shot a two-under 70 in the first and third rounds. She held a one-stroke lead as she approached the 17th tee box and parred her final two holes. Individual champion Alice Johansson (Washington State) birdied her final two holes to finish minus-four.
A graduate of nearby Coppell High School, Angosta recorded her second career top-10 and highest-ever individual finish. Her final score of 213 was also her second-best low-54 total.
Barroso Sá was three-under over rounds two and three. She stayed within a stroke of Angosta for the first 15 holes in the final round. The junior posted her fourth top-10 finish in two-plus seasons in Fort Worth. Barroso Sá has now finished even-or-under-par in seven of her 25 career starts.
Meagan Winans proved invaluable in preserving the Horned Frogs' cushion atop the leaderboard. The lone senior on TCU's roster, Winans was bogey free in on her way to a one-under 71 and tie for 14th (+5, 221). The final round scorecard signified Winans' 10th par-or-better round in two seasons as a Frog. She has now posted consecutive top-15's, having placed ninth at the Carmel Cup on Sept. 1 at Pebble Beach Golf Links.
Camille Min-Gaultier tied for 23rd at nine-over (225). Her 54-hole run was highlighted by a second round 71 (-1) on Monday.
Fellow freshman Gracie McGovern shot a three-over 75 to seal TCU's third round tally. She tied for 34th at 12-over.
Sofie Dimitrova competed as an individual and was a part of a four-way gridlock for 23rd with Min-Gaultier.
TCU was the only program in the 11-team field to finish par-or-better in multiple rounds and the lone squad with two top-five individual finishers.
