FORT WORTH – TCU Athletics has announced facility upgrades to the Lowden Track and Field Complex and Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
Both facilities are set for upgrades to the competition surface that will allow the Horned Frogs to host the nation's top collegiate programs on their home turf.
The upgrades to the Lowden Track and Field Complex include a new track surface, improvements to the facility drainage systems and upgrades to the long and triple jump pits. Last renovated in 2011, the new track surface will give TCU's sprints program the chance to post even faster times, while new sand pits will help the Frogs continue their excellence in the field events.
"My staff and I are excited to about the new improvements to our track," said TCU track and field head coach Khadevis Robinson. "The facilities at TCU are amazing, and this new track is a testament to the support track and field has at TCU."
Already one of the finest college tennis facilities, the six Bartzen Varsity Courts and eight public courts at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center will be resurfaced by Har-Tru Sport Coatings. Har-Tru, LLC is the official surface of the ATP National Bank Open and Mubadala Citi DC Open and is the surface of choice at many ATP Challenger level events. The material incorporates an acrylic coating that creates a consistent, durable, high-performance playing surface with high yield application rates and long-term surface stability.
"All of us involved in the TCU tennis programs are excited for the upcoming resurfacing efforts by TCU," said TCU men's tennis head coach David Roditi. "Our Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center is one of the most beautiful and unique centers in the country. This shows TCU would like to keep it that way."
In preparation for the project, the track will close on Monday, Sept. 2. The Lowdon Track & Field Complex will remain closed until the scheduled project completion in January 2025 ahead of the track season. During this timeframe, the entire complex will be closed to the public, students and faculty.
"No construction is planned outside the bounds of the Lowdon Track & Field Complex, so disruptions should be kept to a minimum," said Morgan McGlothlin, project manager. "We're excited to be a small part of the coach's vision for the program."
Located on the southwest corner of the TCU campus, the all-purpose facility was made possible by the generosity of long-time TCU supporters Robert and Maria Lowdon and was officially dedicated on October 25, 1999.
The Bartzen Varsity Courts are currently being resurfaced and are set to reopen on Aug. 24. Public courts 1-4 will undergo resurfacing from Aug. 26-31 while courts 5-8 will receive the upgrade on Sept. 2-7.
TCU tennis will debut its new playing surface at the collegiate level in a pair of ITA fall championship events. The Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center hosts the women's ITA Texas Regional on Oct. 10-14 and is the site for one of four inaugural ITA Sectional Championships on the men's side from Nov. 7-10.
