Fearnley and Pinnington receive singles recognition; Gorzny and Vives get the nod in doubles
FORT WORTH – Four Horned Frogs own the dual distinction of being both 2024 NCAA Champions and All-Americans.
Jake Fearnley and Jack Pinnington each attained All-American status in singles while Sebastian Gorzny and Pedro Vives got the nod in doubles as formally announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) on Wednesday. All four players received seeded positioning in the NCAA Individual Championships, thereby earning automatic All-American accolades.
Fearnley is now a four-time All-American, having garnered singles and doubles honors in 2023 and received the recognition in doubles in 2022. His four All-American accolades are tied for the third-most in program history. Pinnington, Gorzny and Vives are the 30th, 31st, and 32nd All-Americans in program history.
Both Fearnley and Pinnington met all three criteria for ITA All-American honors, having reached the round of 16 of the Individual Championships and now sporting a top-20 end-of-season singles ranking
The Britons finished sixth and eighth, respectively, in the final ITA rankings. In doing so, they each qualified for the ATP Tour Accelerator Programme. By finishing inside the top-10 of the ITA rankings, Pinnington and Fearnley can now utilize up to eight wild cards and advance directly to the main draw of ATP Challenger Tour events over the next 12 months.
The duo also became the seventh and eighth Horned Frogs to garner a final ITA top-10 singles ranking, joining fellow All-Americans David Pate (1982-83), Tony Bujan (1992), Paul Robinson (1995-96), Esteban Carril (1999-00), Cameron Norrie (2016-17) and Alex Rybakov (2019).
Pinnington, who was crowned Most Outstanding Player at the NCAA Championships, produced a 35-8 combined overall singles record and 27-7 tally vs. ranked opponents. He set a Big 12 era school record for most singles wins in a season. His 35 singles triumphs were the third-most of any collegian in 2023-24. Pinnington was 9-0 in postseason play and went six-for-six on court one in the NCAA Tournament, defeating No. 1 Elliot Spizzirri in TCU's 4-3 championship victory vs. Texas. His sophomore campaign also included unanimous All-Big 12 first team singles honors, ITA Indoor National Championships All-Tournament team recognition and a runner-up finish at the ITA National Fall Championships.
Fearnley knocked off the country's top-two players in Spizzirri and Johannus Monday (Tennessee) on his way to a 19-4 end-of-season singles record. He alternated time at one and two with Pinnington and was a stellar 10-1 on the top court. Like Pinnington, Fearnley garnered unanimous All-Big 12 first team singles accolades and Indoor Nationals All-Tournament team credentials. Fearnley was also tabbed to the NCAA Championships All-Tournament team. He departs TCU with a combined 155-62 overall record (85-32 singles, 70-30 doubles).
Gorzny and Vives were elevated to the No. 8 seed in the 32-pair doubles bracket. The tandem ascended as high as No. 2 in the ITA rankings during the regular season. Gorzny and Vives combined for an 18-6 record. They were semifinalists at the ITA National Fall Championships and claimed the ITA Texas Regional crown.
TCU saw five players claim a combined seven end-of-season ITA rankings and took home four top-20 marks. Vives and Gorzny checked in at No. 14 in doubles after reaching the round of 16 of the Individual Championships. Fearnley and Vives jumped all the way to 18h in doubles after pitching a 6-0 record and defeating three top-five opponents in postseason play. Gorzny was tabbed No. 67 in singles while Vives and Lui Maxted rounded out TCU's rankings haul at 80th and 84th, respectively.
