TCU placed all five golfers in the top-35 of the individual leaderboard
NAPA, Calif. – TCU picked as good a day as any to play its best opening round in 2023-24.
With the NCAA Championship selection show two weeks away, the Horned Frogs shot a six-over 294 and assumed sole possession of seventh place on Monday at the Silverado Showdown.
TCU finished ahead of four teams featured in the top-30 of the Scoreboard team rankings, among them No. 4 UCLA and 16th-ranked tournament co-host Oregon. Half of the 16-team field is comprised of top-30 squads.
The Horned Frogs joined No. 12 Pepperdine and No. 14 Arizona as one of only three teams to place all five of their golfers inside the top-35 of the individual leaderboard. TCU's seventh place standing is its second highest through nine events this season.
Collectively, TCU, which began on the back nine, carded seven of its 11 birdies over the first half of play on the grounds of Silverado Resort and Spa.
Meagan Winans tallied a team-high three and is tied for 25th at plus-one (73). Her 73 strokes are her fewest in an opening round all season.
Kirstin Angosta matched Winans' scorecard after finishing the front nine one-under.
Lois Lau, Sofia Barroso Sa and Sofie Dimitrova all tied for 35th at two-over. Lau, TCU's sole senior, played under-par golf over her final 12 holes. Barroso Sa was bogey-free for 13 straight pins spanning holes 11 through five. Dimitrova, a freshman, signed her lowest first round score of her college career.
TCU sits one stroke back of No. 27 San Jose State for sixth ahead of Tuesday's second round. The top-five teams are all even-par or better, with No. 9 USC leading the way at minus-six.
