Bullpen tosses 6 2/3 scoreless innings
The Rundown
TCU found itself in a 4-0 hole after the first. The Horned Frogs thought they had turned an inning ending double play, but the call was reversed on replay and the Jayhawks turned it into a 4-0 lead.
A two-out rally in the second started by a walk to Chase Brunson led to TCU's first run of the game as Luke Boyers doubled home the run.
Four runs in the sixth turned the deficit into a 5-4 lead. Logan Maxwell tripled to start the inning and scored on an Anthony Silva double. With the bases-loaded, Boyers singled to make it a one-run ballgame. The Frogs completed the comeback on a two-out double from Sam Myers.
The combination of Zachary Cawyer (5-0) and Ben Abeldt held the Jayhawks in check. Cawyer took over with two on and one out in the third. He retired two straight to get out of the inning. He finished with 2 2/3 scoreless innings. Abeldt pitched three scoreless and fanned six, including five of the last six he faced to get the game to the ninth.
In the ninth, the Horned Frogs exploded for eight runs on six hits. TCU batted around before the first out was recorded. Byrne drove in the first run of the inning and Silva worked a bases-loaded walk to make it a 7-4. Ryder Robinson broke the game open with a two-run single. A wild pitch, followed by RBI singles from Karson Bowen and Boyers pushed the lead to 12-4. Peyton Chatagnier hit a sacrifice fly to complete the scoring.
Braeden Sloan made his first weekend start of the season. He allowed four runs on four hits, walked two and struck out two in 2 1/3 of an inning. Kyle Ayers closed out the game with a scoreless ninth.
