NORMAN, Okla. – A second half Sooner scoring surge stymied TCU's bid to upset 24th-ranked Oklahoma on Wednesday in the Lloyd Noble Center.
Oklahoma outscored TCU 41-28 out of the locker room, transforming a four-point game at halftime into a 72-55 win.
The Sooners shot 16-28 (57 percent) in the second half. Five consecutive points from Aaliyah Roberson pulled the Horned Frogs within four at 40-36 with 4:28 remaining in the third quarter. TCU stayed within three possessions of Oklahoma (16-6, 10-1 Big 12) early in the fourth but a 12-2 run midway through the frame swelled the deficit to 68-50.
Sydney Harris led all scorers for the second consecutive outing, tallying 17 points on 6-12 shooting. Harries collected 13 of her points in the first half. The sophomore bookended a pair of 3-pointers around a finish at the rim by Roberson to put TCU on top 23-22 at the 7:35 mark of the second quarter. It proved to be TCU's final lead.
Roberson finished with 13 points and a game-high nine rebounds.
Tara Manumaleuga dished out a game-high eight assists.
TCU struggled to string stops in transition and scores together. The Horned Frogs assumed a brief 10-9 lead five-and-a-half minutes into the first quarter, only for Oklahoma to counter with five unanswered points. Free throws from Victoria Flores cut the Sooner lead down to 31-29 following TCU's first possession of the second half. The Sooners then scored seven straight over 1:11 to take a nine-point advantage and force TCU into timeout.
The final 1:34 of the game saw dual-sport athlete Sarah Sylvester and walk-ons Piper Davis, Ella Hamlin and Mekhayia Moore take the court together for the first time since joining the squad on Jan. 22 following open tryouts. Sylvester scored her first collegiate point off a free throw on a day the collective sports world celebrated National Girls and Women in Sports Day.
TCU (15-7, 2-9 Big 12) was uncharacteristically cold from behind the arc. The Horned Frogs, who entered averaging a Big 12-leading 10 three's per game, shot 6-26 from distance.
Oklahoma transformed 16 TCU turnovers into as many points.
