Horned Frogs reach win No. 8 with their fifth victory in the last six games
CINCINNATI, Ohio – Savion Williams ran for two first-half touchdowns and a strong defensive effort led TCU to a 20-13 win over Cincinnati on a cold and snowy Saturday night at Nippert Stadium.
TCU (8-4, 6-3) won its third straight game and fifth in the last six contests.
The Horned Frogs led 20-7 at the half and relied on their defense and punter Ethan Craw to secure the win. Craw placed four of his five punts inside the 20, including three inside the 6. He pinned Cincinnati at its own 3 with a minute to play and TCU holding a 20-13 lead. The Bearcats advanced to the TCU 40 before Bud Clark batted down a Hail Mary pass in the end zone on the final play.
Trailing 20-7, Cincinnati drove to the TCU 12 with 11:34 to play. However, the TCU defense stiffened with Channing Canada recording his first career interception in the end zone to halt the scoring threat.
Williams' pair of 2-yard scoring runs for the Horned Frogs gave him six rushing touchdowns in the last five games. He first reached the end zone after Brent Matiscik recovered a muffed punt following TCU's opening series. The Horned Frogs took advantage by driving 29 yards in seven plays for a quick 7-0 lead on Williams' carry. The series was keyed by a 19-yard completion from Josh Hoover to Jack Bech on a 3rd-and-14.
Kyle Lemmermann's 27-yard field goal on the third play of the second quarter extended the Horned Frogs' lead to 10-0. He later added a 35-yard make.
Immediately following a Cincinnati score to cut TCU's deficit to 10-7, the Horned Frogs answered with a 7-play, 65-yard scoring drive, keyed by a 40-yard completion from Hoover to Blake Nowell, to take a 17-7 lead on Williams' second scoring run of the game.
