Are the first individual champions in program history since 1981
WACO, Texas – Pedro Vives and Lui Maxted are national champions.
Again.
Vives and Maxted won the NCAA Doubles Championship on Sunday, defeating Michigan's Gavin Young and Benjamin Kittay, 6-3, 6-7 (6), 1-0 [10-2], in a thrilling final at the Hurd Tennis Center.
Vives and Maxted gave TCU its first individual national title in 45 seasons and second-ever. They join David Pate and Karl Richter, who claimed the doubles crown in 1981, as two of just four players in program history to win an NCAA Individual Championship.
Sunday's triumph made Vives and Maxted four-time national Champions. The tandem guided TCU to consecutive ITA Indoor National Championships as underclassmen in 2022 and 2023. Both players were invaluable in staking the Horned Frogs to their first NCAA team championship in May.
Notably, Vives, a native of Palma de Mallorca, Spain, is the first player of Spanish descent to take home an NCAA Individual Championship.
Vives and Maxted surrendered just two sets total in their stampede through the 32-team bracket. The championship culmination was all the more impressive by to the fact they had not partnered in doubles since 2021 before commencing the fall season.
Serving first, Vives and Maxted scored the match's first break vs. the Wolverines level at two games all. They broke again midway through the second frame to assume a 4-3 lead, only for Young and Kittay to return the favor. Vives and Maxted had match point on the Wolverine duo up 6-5 in the tiebreaker. The TCU duo claimed six consecutive points after beginning the 10-point super tiebreaker even at one point apiece and effectively end the match.
Vives and Maxted concluded the fall season with a 9-1 doubles record and are likely assured of a No. 1 national ranking ahead of next week's publication. Both players attained All-American accolades in singles and doubles after advancing to the round of 16 in both brackets.
TCU now breaks for the winter holidays before commencing the 2025 dual season on Jan. 10 at home vs. Abilene Christian.
