Vives and Maxted aiming to become Horned Frogs' second NCAA Individual Champions
WACO, Texas – TCU will challenge for an NCAA title for the second time in 2024.
Pedro Vives and Lui Maxted advanced to the NCAA Doubles Championship on Saturday, defeating Texas' Lucas Brown and Timo Legout, 6-4, 6-2, in a semifinal tilt at the Hurd Tennis Center.
Vives and Maxted are the third doubles team in program history and first since Ashley Fisher and Jason Weir-Smith in 1996 to reach the NCAA final. The duo is aiming to become TCU's second NCAA Individual Champions. David Pate and Karl Richter claimed the crown in doubles in 1981 in what remains TCU's sole NCAA individual title.
They face Michigan's Gavin Young and Benjamin Kittay on Sunday around 1 p.m. in the final.
It will be the second time Vives and Young, the preseason ITA No. 7 singles player, have squared off in doubles. Vives contributed to a 6-4 dual doubles victory over Young on Feb. 13 in a 4-0 win for TCU over the Wolverines during the indoor season.
Notably, Vives and Maxted were slated to face Young in the ITA Central Sectional Championships doubles semifinal on Nov. 9 in Fort Worth. The Wolverines withdrew from the match, as Young and Kittay had already qualified for the NCAA Championships.
Tied 4-4, Vives and Maxted secured their first of two double breaks vs. Brown and Legout in what proved to be a turning point in the match. The TCU tandem has not surrendered a service game in three consecutive matches. Legout, a 22-year-old freshman, entered the day having won 24 consecutive matches to begin his college career.
Vives and Maxted enter Sunday's championship having already earned All-American status in both singles and doubles. They are two of eight players in program history to garner two sets of All-American accolades in the same season.
