Alvarez/Moreno earn silver at 2024 AVCA National Beach Pairs Championship

TCU places two pairs in the top 10
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Two pairs from TCU traveled to Huntsville, Ala., for the 2024 AVCA National Beach Pairs Championships. Daniela Alvarez and Tania Moreno went into the tournament as the No. 1 seed and Maria Gonzalez and Hailey Hamlett were the No. 6 seed.
Hamlett/Gonzalez tied for the ninth-place spot in the tournament. Alvarez and Moreno made it to the finals in the Champions Bracket, but fell short to UCLA's Boyd/Perez, giving the two Horned Frogs a silver finish.
Over the weekend, the Frogs only dropped five sets.
The Rundown
Friday featured pool play. Based on their seeding the two Horned Frog pairs played in both Pool 1 and 6. Each finished first in their respective pool.
Alvarez/Moreno's first win was against No. 64 seeded Bockhorst/McWhorter from Lindenwood (21-12, 21-6). Their second win for the day was over USC's No. 33 seeded Showalter/Young (21-12, 21-15).
Gonzalez/Hamlett first downed No. 59 seeded Alden/Guerra-Acuña from Boise State. Then, the pairing downed UNF's Murray/Pierce, who came into the tournament as the No. 27 seed.
Saturday started the Champions Bracket for the tournament. Since the Frogs went undefeated in Pool Play, they were seeded in alignment with the pool numbering.
As the No. 1 seed Alvarez/Moreno started the weekend with a winning matchup against GCU's No. 33 Drake/Drake (21-15, 21-11). To propel the duo to the quarterfinals, the two downed Stanford's No. 17 seeded Jackson/Wilson (21-19, 21-16). Once in the quarterfinals, the two saw victory over Cal's No. 25 seeded Donley/Sherman (21-17, 21-16) to send them to the semifinals.
Gonzalez/Hamlett started in the bracket as the No. 6 seed. The pairing downed Stetson's No. 27 seeded Camp/Ozeta (21-12, 21-18) in their first match but fell to the 11th seeded Ferch/Inskeep Cal Poly (21-13, 21-18).
Their loss to the Mustangs placed them in the ninth-place bracket for Sunday, where they beat LBSU's Wagdy/Westby and Texas's Parmelly/Zolnercikova. These wins tied the two Frogs up with ASU's Kensinger/Williamson for a ninth-place finish.
Sunday for Alvarez/Moreno first featured a win in the semifinals over 12th seeded Rockwell/Sorra from Stanford (21-15, 21-17). In the finals, the two fell to UCLA's X seeded Boyd/Perez (21-16, 21-17).
The two Horned Frog's place in the finals marked the third time a TCU pair has made it in the championship's three-year run.
