Horned Frogs improve to 10-1 at home
FORT WORTH – Backed by an efficient and balanced offensive attack, No. 18 TCU took care of business at home, sweeping Colorado in straight sets on Wednesday night.
Playing in Schollmaier Arena for only the third time in October, the Horned Frogs (15-5, 7-3 Big 12) improved to 10-1 on their home court this season. Ten different players contributed to the scoring effort for TCU, which posted a .359 offensive mark with 50 kills on 103 attempts. Melanie Parra finished with 16 kills on a blistering .577 clip and added 12 digs for her 10th double-double of the year. Becca Kelley added 10 kills in just two sets of action, while Jalyn Gibson followed with nine on 23 swings.
The defensive efforts were equally impressive as freshman libero Alice Volpe registered a career-high 20 digs, and Sarah Sylvester tallied six blocks to help hold the Buffaloes to a .155 hitting percentage.
Graduate transfer Stephanie Young also checked into a match for the first time this season, making her TCU debut. The Frisco native finished with a kill, three assists two digs and a block.
TCU and Colorado came out evenly matched, splitting the first 20 points. Tied at 10, both teams continued to play close, with the Buffs holding a slight 15-14 edge at the media break. Out of the timeout, Gibson and Kelley helped the Frogs rattle off four unanswered points to retake the lead, and TCU capitalized on three Colorado errors to break things open at 22-16. Jaylen Clark added an ace off the bench late, and Alexis Roberson closed out the first set with a kill for a 25-18 victory.
The Frogs' hot hitting continued into the second as they jumped out to an early 10-6 lead. Parra quickly picked up her 10th kill of the match before a Young kill and Volpe ace helped TCU take its largest lead of the set at eight points. The Frogs fended off two late runs from the Buffs to secure the second, 25-20.
Looking to close out the sweep, TCU came out firing again, doubling Colorado up at 8-4 before it was forced to take a timeout. The Buffs responded out of the break, cutting the deficit to one before a Hendrix kill reignited the Frogs. A 4-0 run restored TCU's cushion with a 16-10 lead, and following a small Colorado scoring burst, a 9-2 run capped off the Frogs' night.
No. 18 TCU is back in action on Friday, Nov. 1, against Iowa State at 6:30 p.m. CT inside Schollmaier Arena.
