Frogs fend off late comeback attempt in five-set thriller
HOUSTON – Battling on the road, No. 22 TCU Volleyball fended off a late comeback attempt to pick up a 3-2 victory over Houston on Wednesday night at the Fertitta Center.
It marked the 10th win of the season for the Horned Frogs (10-3, 2-1 Big 12), who were pushed to five sets in a thriller. After letting a 2-0 lead slip, TCU found a way to win, going on an 8-0 run to finish off the Cougars (6-7, 1-2 Big 12) for their first road conference victory this season.
A big blocking presence and 22 kills from Melanie Parra proved to be the difference for the Frogs. The defense tallied 14 rejections, their most in a match this season, led by Sarah Sylvester with eight, followed by three others with at least five as TCU held Houston to a .160 clip. Offensively, Jalyn Gibson and Becca Kelley joined Parra in double-figures, finishing with 13 and 10 kills respectively. Further, Gibson, Parra and Lily Nicholson all recorded double-doubles on the night.
TCU jumped out to an 8-3 lead, tallying four blocks in the first eight points. However, the Cougars answered with a 5-0 run of their own to knot things back up. Looking to pull away, Kelley and Gibson caught fire, helping TCU build up a five-point advantage at 17-12. Houston was able to cut the deficit to two, but Parra silenced the Cougar rally, racking up nine kills in the set alone, and Kelley finished things off with a kill for the 25-21 win.
The Frogs got off to a hot start in the second, scoring the first four points and grabbing a 12-4 lead before Houston called for a timeout. As TCU marched towards set point, the Cougars clawed back, but it wasn't enough to slow down the hot-hitting Frogs, who posted a .379 clip in the second with 13 kills on 29 swings and won the set 25-19 to go up 2-0 in the match.
Houston responded in the third, to extend the match. Trailing by three, a pair of TCU blocks sparked a mini 3-0 run to tie the set up late at 19-19 and force a timeout, but the Cougars scores six of the final eight points to take the set 25-21 and stay alive.
With momentum starting to shift, Houston controlled the fourth set. Leading by as many as nine, the Cougars drew even at two sets apiece and forced a decisive fifth set.
Both teams traded points back-and-forth to start set five. Tied at seven, a service error gave TCU a one-point edge as the teams traded benches. It proved to be key in getting Cecily Bramschriber to the service line. The senior served the Frogs out on an 8-0 scoring run that featured two of her four aces, including the match-winner.
No. 22 TCU is back in action on Sunday, Oct. 6, against No. 14 Baylor at 2 p.m. inside Schollmaier Arena. Fans can purchase tickets here for the top 25 matchup.
