WACO, Texas – No. 9 TCU's comeback attempt fell short, as the Horned Frogs fell to No. 20 Baylor in a five-set heartbreaker on Saturday afternoon.
The Frogs (11-3, 1-1 Big 12) trailed Baylor (8-3, 3-0 Big 12) two sets to one, but battled back to force a winner-take-all fifth set. After coming out flat and dropping the first four points, TCU clawed its way back to tie the set at 7-7, but Baylor went on an 8-2 run to win the match, 3-2.
Sophomore Evan Hendrix led all players with 25 kills on a .270 clip. She added a season-best 17 digs for her seventh double-double of the year. Becca Kelley also finished in double figures with 14 kills.
Middle blocker Sarah Sylvester etched her name into the record books, passing Natalie Gower (396, 2013-16) and Regan McGuire (397, 2013-16) for third on the all-time TCU blocks list. The Livonia, Michigan, native tallied five rejections, giving her 400 in her career as well.
The Bears took a very close opening set 25-22 over the Frogs. Both teams went back-and-forth until a little 4-0 burst gave Baylor a 15-11 lead at the media timeout. TCU answered and tied the set back up at 18 all, but a pair of late service errors and a BU ace sealed the first set for the Bears.
Looking to respond in the second, the Frogs jumped out to an 8-3 lead, but saw it dwindle down to a two-point advantage at the media break. Both teams traded 3-0 scoring runs and found things knotted up at 20. TCU managed to score three of the final four points of the set to even the match at 1-1 with a 25-23 victory.
Baylor never trailed in the third after opening the set on a 10-2 tear. The Frogs continued to fight, but the deficit was too large to overcome as the Bears took set three 25-19.
Needing to win the fourth set to stay alive, TCU gave everything it had left in the tank. Trading points in the early going, the Frogs finally caught a break as Alexis Roberson sparked a 4-0 run, forcing Baylor to call a timeout. TCU was the first to 20 points, but the Bears found momentum late and earned set point at 24-23. Head coach Jason Williams used a timeout to reset his offense, which worked perfectly as Lauren Murphy helped the Frogs side out, Kelley put down the go-ahead kill and Murphy perfectly placed an untouched ace to give TCU the fourth set, 26-24.
But in the end, TCU ran out of steam, unable to muster up a late fifth-set comeback.
The Frogs are back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 1, against No. 18 Kansas at 6:30 p.m. CT inside Schollmaier Arena.
