Angosta wins individual championship; Horned Frogs take team trophy by one stroke
SAN MARCOS, Texas – With team and individual titles hanging in the balance, Kirstin Angosta delivered.
Angosta birdied three of her final four holes to win the Jim West Challenge with a score of 10-under 206. Her efforts lifted TCU to 22-under (842) and a one-stroke victory over Houston.
"I cannot express how proud I am of this team," said head coach Angie Ravaioli-Larkin. "Today was a battle and they continued to show grit and stayed dedicated to their process throughout the day. It was tough, but they proved to be tougher."
TCU maintained a narrow lead for the majority of Tuesday's final round at Kissing Tree Golf Club. A late surge by third-place Oklahoma (-20, 844) saw TCU trail by two strokes at minus-19 with three holes to go. Angosta, tied for fourth at the time, birdied holes 15 and 17 to get to nine-under and join a six-way gridlock for first.
Angosta and Meagan Winans each birdied their final hole. The simultaneous birdies on holes 18 and three, respectively, helped TCU overtake Oklahoma and hold off Houston.
"I am so happy and proud of Kirstin," Ravaioli-Larkin said. "She was so incredibly consistent and patient all week. It was only a matter of time before she won. She works on her physical game as well as mentally. She will continue to reap the rewards with her dedication and mindset."
The championship was TCU's second in its last three events. The Horned Frogs won the Bettie Lou Evans Invitational on Sept. 11 in Nicholasville, Ky.
TCU last claimed two team titles in the same season in 2018-19, when it captured both the Maryb S. Krauth Invitational and Jim West Challenge during the fall portion of its schedule.
The tournament trophy is TCU's 54th all-time and 20th under Ravaioli-Larkin.
Angosta became TCU's first medalist in two seasons. TCU last took home an individual title in 2022 when Angosta's teammate, Sofia Barroso Sá, won the Barbara Nicklaus Cup as a freshman.
TCU placed three in the top-10 of the final individual leaderboard. Camille Min-Gaultier tied for second with a nine-under 207. Sofie Dimitrova, who competed as an individual, shot a six-under 210 and tied for 10th.
All three players notched collegiate low-54 records.
Barroso Sá tied for 22nd at one-under. She and Angosta have finished even or under par in TCU's last three tournaments.
Winans and Gracie McGovern capped TCU's countable scoring in a tie for 37th (+3, 219). Winans was one-under (71) in each of her final two rounds.
Angosta's consistency ultimately won the tournament. She was tied for second entering the day and played bogey-free over her last 28 holes. The Coppell High School graduate played even-par golf on the front nine to begin round three and was four-under after making the turn.
She has carded four sub-70's in her last five rounds played. Angosta, No. 77 in the Scoreboard individual rankings, earned her third career top-10 and second of the season with Monday's medal. She finished as the outright runner up at the Bettie Lou Evans Invitational via a three-under 213.
Min-Gaultier appeared poised to share co-champion honors until Angosta's back nine birdie bender. The freshman birdied six of her first 14 holes, including four on the front nine to get to nine-under. Min-Gaultier parred her final four holes and was tied for first entering the clubhouse.
She has placed in the top-two of TCU's individual leaderboard in two straight events. Min-Gaultier was TCU's top finisher at the Schooner Fall Classic on Sept. 23, tying for 11th (-2, 138).
Dimitrova's push for the top-10 was ignited by a second round score of 68 (-4) on Sunday. A three-under back nine boosted her final score to minus-6. The finish signified Dimitrova's first career top-10.
Barroso Sá, No. 86 nationally, has cracked the top-25 in each of TCU's four events. She has turned in a countable score in all 11 rounds.
Winans and McGovern combined to finish one-under on the back nine on Monday and help seal the victory.
