Horned Frogs improve to 9-1 at home in 2024
FORT WORTH – Jalyn Gibson and Melanie Parra each tallied over 20 kills, and Becca Kelley added a career-high 19 as No. 18 TCU rolled to a 3-1 victory over Cincinnati Saturday afternoon inside Schollmaier Arena.
The Horned Frogs (14-4, 6-2 Big 12) put on an offensive show for fans, hitting at a .362 clip led by their three-headed dragon of Gibson, Kelley and Parra. The trio accounted for 62 of the team's 67 kills (92.5 percent). TCU also shined at the service line with 10 aces, but the real highlight of the afternoon was the 1,000th career kill from senior Melanie Parra. Entering the day with 983 kills, the star from Sinaloa, Mexico, tallied 22 on a .362 clip to become the 14th player in TCU history with 1,000 kills.
Gibson joined Parra with 20-plus kills, racking up 21 on a blistering .459 clip. The junior went over 700 kills in her career, achieving the milestone with her second kill of the day. Kelley turned in a career-best 19 kills, one shy of joining her teammates with 20, on 34 swings for a .441 hitting percentage.
Setter Lily Nicholson continued to keep her offense rolling at home, dishing out 50 assists for the fifth time this season. She also added 13 digs along with Gibson as the two finished with double-doubles.
Cincinnati came out hot in the opening set, delivering the first punch. The Bearcats (11-7, 2-5 Big 12) hit .450 in the set alone, which featured 18 ties and six lead changes. The Frogs used a late 3-0 run to retake the lead and force a timeout at 20-19 following the first ace of the match. Trading points back-and-forth late, the Cincinnati fended off two TCU set points and scored three unanswered to hand the Frogs their first loss this season in a set that extends past 25 points, 27-25.
Looking to respond in set two, Parra came alive. The senior had a quiet first set but made sure the Bearcats felt her presence the rest of the way. TCU never trailed in the second, breaking away with a 4-0 run into the media timeout to take a 15-10 lead. The Frogs' attacking trio poured it on while adding three aces to keep Cincinnati on its toes, evening the match with a 25-19 set victory.
Tied at one set apiece, TCU took all the momentum back and dominated the Bearcats in set three. The Frogs started off hot, taking a 7-3 lead, but Cincinnati battled back to tie the score at 9-9. Needing a spark, Parra delivered with four straight kills, including the 1,000th of her career, causing Schollmaier to erupt. It quickly turned into an 8-0 run as the Frogs extended their lead to 12 and never looked back as they grabbed a 25-13 set win.
TCU kept its foot on the gas heading into set four to close out the match. The Frogs continued to pound the ball, doubling up the Bearcats at 12-6. The lead only grew as Parra and Gibson went over the 20-kill threshold, and TCU cruised to victory. Evan Hendrix called game for the Frogs, slamming down the overpass to cap off the fourth set, 25-16.
No. 18 TCU gets a small break next week, taking on No. 22 Baylor in their lone match on Oct. 25 at 5 p.m. CT in Waco.
