Horned Frogs give Red Raiders fits at the service line
LUBBOCK, Texas – No. 18 TCU volleyball made quick work of Texas Tech, sweeping the Red Raiders to wrap up a three-match road swing on Wednesday night at the United Supermarkets Arena.
The Horned Frogs (13-4, 5-2 Big 12) hit .352 as a team and were lights out at the service line, finishing the night with seven aces. It marked the fifth straight win over Texas Tech. Melanie Parra led TCU with 19 kills on 40 swings for a .400 clip. She also totaled 10 digs to record her eighth double-double of the season. Jalyn Gibson followed in double-digits with 11 kills while adding four aces at the service line. Becca Kelley and Alexis Roberson combined for 13 kills on a blistering .571 hitting percentage.
Tied at five in the opening set, the TCU offense started to heat up. The three-headed dragon on Gibson, Kelley and Parra all took turns scoring points to put the Frogs in front 15-10 at the media break. Texas Tech continued to scrap for points, using a late 7-2 lead to cut the lead to two at 23-21, but TCU had seen enough. Roberson slammed down a kill for set point, and Gibson served the Red Raider off the court with an ace to give the Frogs a 25-21 set victory.
Texas Tech hung with TCU through the first 10 points of set two until Gibson sparked a 7-0 run with a kill and carried all the momentum to the service line. In control, the Frogs continued to march towards the finish line and take the second set 25-20 behind a .350 clip as a team.
Leading two sets to none, TCU kept its foot on the gas for the sweep. After three early Texas Tech points, the Frogs completely flipped the set upside down with a 13-1 run as Gibson and Parra picked apart the Red Raiders at the service line. TCU cruised the rest of the way, and Kelley provided the final swing for a dominant 25-13 win in the final set.
No. 18 TCU returns home to Schollmaier Arena on Saturday, Oct. 19, at 1 p.m. CT to host Cincinnati.
