Frogs drop road match at Utah, 0-3
SALT LAKE CITY – Starting the match with a limited roster due to illness, No. 17 TCU put its depth to the test against a strong Utah team. The Horned Frogs, however, were unable to settle into the match, falling in straight sets Thursday night.
Down multiple starters including, four-time Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week Melanie Parra a shorthanded TCU never gave in. Freshman Mikala Young stepped onto the court for the first time in her collegiate career, getting the start. The Dallas native totaled five digs, three kills, a pair of assists and an ace, doing anything and everything her team needed.
Captains Jalyn Gibson and Sarah Sylvester looked to lead the Frogs offensively, while junior Riley Weigelt stepped into the libero jersey. Gibson picked up a team-high nine kills, and Sylvester contributed a season-best six.
TCU scored 22 points in each set, despite missing key starters and role players. Trailing by as many as seven in the opening set, the Frogs fended off three-straight set points before dropping it 25-22 as their late rally fell short.
Down 13-18 in set two, Parra ran out of the locker room to give it a go. Battling sickness, the senior sparked some life into TCU and helped her team pull within one point at 19-20 and 22-23, but once again, the Frogs dropped the set 25-22.
Still not quite at full strength, TCU hung right with the Utes and made things interesting. Looking to extend the match, the Frogs forced 15 ties and seven lead changes in the third set. A mini 3-0 run late gave TCU some momentum and forced a Utah timeout, but the opposition rattled off four straight points to take the set and match.
No. 17 TCU looks to bounce back on Saturday with a top 25 road match at No. 23 BYU at 8 p.m. CT.
