Alonso, Chan and Quirijns combined for five individual victories in Mexico
TORREON, Mexico – TCU's newcomers are forever credited as individual victors in the Horned Frogs' program record book.
Freshmen Julian Alonso, Duncan Chan and Kaj Quirijns earned their first collegiate wins at the inaugural US College Cup Invitational, held from Friday-Sunday in Torreon, Mexico.
Organized by Horned Frog head coach David Roditi, the debut event featured round robin singles and doubles matches between players from Abilene Christian, Baylor, Oklahoma and TCU. The tournament was concepted to give younger or developing players an opportunity to play multiple matches while also growing the popularity of college tennis internationally.
Chan earned TCU's signature result on Friday. The Markham, Ontario native wore down Baylor's Ethan Muza over three sets, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2, for the Horned Frogs first win of the weekend. Muza, a junior, has earned multiple wins on courts three through six over his tenure in Waco.
Both Chan and Quirijins picked up multiple victories. The duo won twice together in doubles. They first bested Cesar Barranquero and Dario Kmet – Abilene Christian's top doubles team in 2023 – 6-4 on Saturday. Chan and Quirijns followed up the performance with a 6-3 takedown of Baylor's Justin Braverman and Christopher Frantzen in Sunday's finale.
Before jetting hone to Fort Worth, Chan and Alonso pocketed singles victories at the expense of ACU. Chan took down Kmet, who anchored the No. 1 singles post last spring for the Wildcats, 6-4, 7-6. Alonso entered the winner's circle behind a 6-4, 6-4 win over Barranquero.
Overall, TCU bagged 13 wins – nine singles, four doubles – between the US College Cup Invitational and San Francisco-based Battle in the Bay Classic to kick off its fall season.
Jack Pinnington won thrice in singles at the Battle in the Bay Classic before falling in the semifinals to eventual champion Ozan Baris of Michigan State. Pinnington accounted for five of TCU's eight victories in the Bay Area. He and Lui Maxted teamed up for consecutive 8-7 doubles wins to advance to the semifinals, where they dropped an 8-5 decision to Arizona State's Max McKennon and Constantinos Koshis on Saturday.
Maxted and Sebastian Gorzny combined to add three more singles wins to TCU's weekend haul. Gorzny bettered No. 27 Iiro Vasa of San Diego on Friday, 6-3, 6-3, earning his highest-ranked collegiate victory in the process. Maxted was equally impressive in Thursday's opening round, as he downed Illinois' No. 1 singles player, the 54th-ranked Alex Petrov, 6-7 [2-7], 6-2, 6-4.
TCU now breaks for a week before making the short drive north to Tulsa, Oklahoma for the ITA All-American Championships. The weeklong event runs from Oct. 1-8. Pinnington received an automatic berth to the main singles draw on the strength of his No. 26 ITA ranking. Gorzny, Maxted and Pedro Vives, all of whom are ranked with, were chosen for the qualifying singles draw. Gorzny and Vives, No. 13 in the ITA doubles rankings, garnered a main draw doubles selection. Chan, Maxted, Pinnington and Tomas Jirousek are all pegged to play qualifying doubles. Chan is paired with Maxted while Pinnington is slotted to play alongside Jirousek.
