
Pinnington, Maxted Advance to Semifinals of Battle in the Bay Classic

SAN FRANCISCO – The Horned Frogs are heating up in the Bay Area.
Jack Pinnington and Lui Maxted punched their tickets to the semifinals of the Battle in the Bay Classic on Friday to highlight TCU's showing on day two of college tennis' signature September event.
The duo commenced the morning with an 8-7 [7-3] takedown of Illinois' Alex Petrov and Karlis and Ozolins in doubles.
With the victory, Pinnington and Maxted advance to face Max McKennon and Constantinos Koshis of Arizona State on Saturday for a spot in the finals.
Pinnington, No. 26 in the ITA singles rankings, held of a game McKennon in the round of 16 in singles play shortly after his doubles triumph. He took set one 6-4, then dropped set two 4-6 before rallying past the 125th-ranked McKennon 7-5 in the decisive third frame.
Fellow sophomore Sebastian Gorzny collected the second-of-three Horned Frog singles victories in tandem with Pinnington. The Austin native drew the task of No. 27 Iiro Vasa. Gorzny, No. 43 nationally in singles, swiftly secured his highest-ranked collegiate win, downing Vasa 6-3, 6-3.
Pinnington followed Gorzny's lead, as he walloped No. 13 Jeffrey von der Schulenburg of Virginia 6-0, 7-5 in the quarterfinals to cap TCU's collective effort. Von der Schulenburg represented the highest ranked foe Pinnington has defeated.
Gorzny fell to Arizona's 23rd ranked Colton Smith 2-6, 4-6 in his quarterfinal match.
Maxted, who ousted Petrov – Illinois' No. 1 singles player in 2023 – on Thursday, nearly pulled off the upset of the tournament in the round of 16. He faced the 32-man field's top seed in No. 9 Inaki Montes-De-La Torre. The junior gave the Spaniard all he could handle, narrowly falling by a score of 2=6., 7-6 [7-5], 6-4.
Pinnington is set to battle No. 25 Ozan Baris of Michigan State at approximately 12:45 p.m. CT in the semifinals. Smith and the Spartans' Ronnie Hohmann will line up on the opposite side of the bracket.
He and Maxted's doubles tilt is pegged for an 11 a.m. CT first serve.
