FORT WORTH – Melanie Parra's record-setting 34 kills powered TCU past Florida State, 3-1, on Friday night at Ed and Rae Schollmaier Arena. The Horned Frogs (6-4) extended their winning streak to four games with the victory.
Parra's 34 kills were the most in a game in TCU history in a four-set match and the second-most kills by a player in program history across all matches.
The 34 kills are also the most by a Division I player this season in four sets.
The Rundown
A kill by Audrey Nalls gave TCU the 5-4 advantage, a lead that the Frogs never gave up throughout the frame. Melanie Parra landed her first kill of the night to put TCU up 10-7.
TCU continued to build on its lead and back-to-back kills by Parra put the Frogs up 15-10. The Frogs continued to control the lead and at set point, Parra landed her sixth kill of the game to win the set 25-22.
The Frogs controlled the second set from start-to-finish. TCU hit a match-best .500 and held Florida State to a match-low .161.
Kills from Jalyn Gibson and Parra propelled the Frogs to a 5-0 lead early in the third. TCU never gave up the edge and led by as many as eight before the final scoring run. Up 21-14, kills from Gibson and Parra, and an ace from Nalls, secured the 25-15 set win.
The third set was an even battle, with 10 tied scores and four lead changes. A block from Gibson and Sarah Sylvester tied the contest up at 10-all and back-to-back kills from Parra gave TCU a 12-10 lead.
The Frogs led 15-12 before the Seminoles went on a 4-0 scoring run and never trailed the remainder of the set. Tied at 22, Florida State ended the frame with three straight points to make it a 2-1 match.
Parra completely took over and tallied 13 of her school-record 34 kills in the fourth set alone. Hitting an incredible .550, she gave the Frogs their first two-point lead of the set with a kill to give TCU a 15-13 lead. Parra accounted for six of the Frogs' final eight points, including the final four kills. It was only fitting that the match-winning kill came from Parra as well.
