TCU snapper is a trusted teammate focused on changing lives for the better
(as told to Lily Margaret Greenway)
When I look back at everything my family has done to get to where we are now, it inspires me to work hard and make them proud. My family has taught me I can follow my dreams and do anything I set my mind to. My dad worked his way through medical school and took a leap to move us from Ohio to Texas to put my brothers and me – all of whom would eventually play college football – in a spot for success. Whatever we needed, he provided for us. He took care of us so we never had to worry about anything, and he has the strongest work ethic of anyone I know.
We bond with others by taking the time to understand who they are, where they come from, and what they have gone through. I care about forming relationships, meeting people, and changing lives for the better. You never know who you'll need to help you through hard times, and who will need you. When I first came to TCU, I had no idea who anyone was, but now my friendships connect me across all walks of life. I strive to help out the new guys on the team and show them the path to grow and believe in themselves, like my older teammates did for me when I was younger. We're all out here playing football, but there is more to us than our sport. It's not just about the name and number on the back of the jersey.
Every year for the past three years, I cook a giant crawfish boil – my specialty – for the whole team. We get to spend real time together, take a step back, enjoy life and not worry about football for a little while. And there's nothing like being outside with my friends. This summer, I've spent most of my time off the field either on the golf course or training my new English Bulldog puppy, Tank, into becoming a good dog. I also love to fish and repair boats. I've always been a handyman, and in high school, I bought a boat and worked to refurbish it. I like the process of seeing something come from nothing and making a dream a reality.
I started as a walk-on at TCU, but even as a walk-on, you never know who is looking up to you. I focus on bringing energy to our team and keeping morale high so good things can keep happening. I'm an outgoing, fun, and trustworthy guy. I have the heart to win, because with two fellow football players for brothers, football has always been about competition for me. I'm a perfectionist who works to be the best me I can be, but at the same time, I don't stress about anything I cannot control. I am not the most vocal or the best athlete out there, but I earn my teammates' trust and respect because I practice our values and believe in our goals. The coaches have instilled in our team a belief in the people to the right and left of us. We have the talent, the people in the right places, and a fan base who fills the stands through thick and thin. If we keep the same drive, give it all we've got, and believe in each other, which we are already doing, it will be a very positive season ahead. I recognize that the path of what it takes to win is more than the actual wins and losses, themselves, and I just love every minute of this awesome journey.
