OCALA, Fla. – A storybook season reached its final ride for TCU Equestrian.
No. 4 TCU fell to top-seeded SMU 14-6 on Friday at the World Equestrian Center in the semifinals of the NCEA National Championships.
TCU (13-4) found itself bound the eight ball early, as the Mustangs (11-1) began the meet with a 5-0 Fences sweep. The five-point deficit at the outset proved to be too much to overcome.
SMU then notched a 3-2 victory in Reining to carry an 8-2 lead into the half. The Mustangs tacked on three more points to the scoreboard in Flat to clinch the meet. TCU closed the meet on a high note, winning three of five Horsemanship rides.
Wynne Weatherly closed her TCU career with one final triumph in Flat. She recorded TCU's sole point in the event behind a 247-215 victory. A graduate student from Charlotte, Weatherly departs Fort Worth with 44 wins in purple and white.
Four-time All-American Jessica McAllister staked TCU to two of its five points in Western, as she was victorious in both her Reining and Horsemanship rides.
Shea Graham was the top overall scorer in Reining, as she was awarded 215.5 points. Graham finished with a 3-1 record for the weekend.
Fellow Western All-Americans Girogia Medows and Mattie Dukes joined McAllister in the Horsemanship winner's circle Medows matched McAllister's team-leading score (230) while Dukes' ride was graded of 227.5, accounting for TCU's final point.
The Horned Frogs depart the Sunshine State with plenty to be proud of despite falling short of their ultimate goal of riding for and winning the program's first-ever national title.
The 2022-2023 squad will go down as the winningest in TCU's Big 12 era. TCU's 13 victories and end-of-season winning percentage (.765) are the program's best-ever marks since joining the conference 11 years ago. TCU produced the most NCEA All-American citations (12) and first team All-American accolades (seven) of any program nationwide. The Horned Frogs also maintained a top-three NCEA ranking for the entirety of the regular season for the first time ever and are a shoo-in to find themselves featured in the top-five of the final poll.
TCU appears primed to build off of its second straight NCEA Championships semifinal appearance. In total, 33 of the 39 athletes listed on the Horned Frogs' roster have NCAA eligibility remaining, including seven of the eight athletes who garnered All-American credentials.
