
Rifle Set For PRC Championships In Alaska

TCU will be seeking sixth conference title
FORT WORTH – The No. 1 TCU women's rifle team heads to Fairbanks, Alaska for the Patriot Rifle Conference championships set to take place Saturday at the E.F. Horton Rifle Range at the Patty Center where the teams will shoot smallbore and Sunday's air rifle competition will take place at the Alaska Airlines Gymnasium at the Patty Center.
TCU will be seeking its sixth PRC title. TCU won three consecutive conference titles from 2016-18 in addition to its championships in 2020 and 2021. In all five of their previous championships, the Horned Frogs claimed both the air rifle and smallbore crowns. TCU will also be seeking its seventh air rifle title.
The championships will feature six teams, five of which are ranked in the top 11 in the country. TCU enters the championships ranked No. 1. The host institution, Alaska, is No. 2. Also ranked are Nebraska (No. 6), Air Force (No. 7) and Ohio State (No. 11). UTEP is the sixth team participating.
TCU has had an outstanding year on the range. The Frogs have fired six of the top 10 air rifle scores, seven of the top 10 smallbore marks and seven of the top 10 aggregate scores in program history.
The Frogs currently lead the NCAA in air rifle aggregate (2,385.00) and rank second in smallbore (2,355.73) and aggregate score (4,740.73). TCU boasts five of the top air rifle shooters in the country and four of the top 20 smallbore shooters. The Horned Frogs own the best three-score average in the country at 4,753.67.
Freshman Julie Johannessen continues to shine on the range and is coming off her first career perfect score in air rifle. She sits fifth nationally in air rifle (596.90) and second in smallbore (592.40). Katie Zaun (7th, 595.88) and Kristen Hemphill (8th, 595.81) are among the top air rifle shooters in the country. Abigail Gordon sits 11th nationally in smallbore (587.80), while Zaun is 16th nationally in the discipline (587.25).
