Gibson and Parra both earn AVCA postseason honors for the first time
FORT WORTH – Jalyn Gibson and Melanie Parra added to their postseason accolades as the two Horned Frogs were named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-Southwest Region First Team on Tuesday morning.
The duo's selection to the All-Southwest Region Team marks the first time TCU has earned multiple AVCA All-Region honorees since 2016. It's both Horned Frogs' first time earning AVCA All-Region honors.
Both Frogs are now eligible for the AVCA All-American Team, which will be announced Dec. 13 ahead of the Final Four of the NCAA Division I Volleyball Championship.
Gibson and Parra led the Horned Frogs to their second straight NCAA Tournament berth. Parra (First Team) and Gibson (Second Team) both garnered their first career All-Big 12 honors this year as well.
Parra led TCU and ranked 12th in the NCAA in points per set (5.17) and 17th with 4.38 kills per set. No stranger to AVCA recognition, Parra earned AVCA National Player of the Week honors (Sept. 19) after recording 34 kills in TCU's 3-1 win over Florida State. Her 34 kills broke the four-set school record and are also the second-most kills in a single match in program history.
She garnered Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week honors twice, with her second honor on Oct. 3 after tallying 34 kills once again in TCU's 3-2 win over Texas Tech (Sept. 29). She became the first player in program history to record two 34-kill matches.
Parra has recorded a team-leading 13 double-doubles on the season, including a double-double in both NCAA Tournament matches this season for the Frogs. Starting in 29 matches this season, Parra tallied 10+ kills in 23 matches this season. She also recorded 20+ kills in eight matches, including the first 20-kill match of her career when she went for 27 kills at a .453 clip in TCU's 3-1 win over Hawai'i (Sept. 14).
Parra's 569 points on the season is the new single-season school record for total points. She also ranks fourth on TCU's single-season records list with 482 total kills. Additionally, Parra's 4.38 kills per set is tied for third in TCU history and her 0.44 aces per set is also fourth in program history.
Gibson finished her sophomore campaign averaging 3.24 kills per set at a team-leading .259 clip with 2.32 digs per set as well. Starting 27 matches this year for the Horned Frogs, Gibson recorded double-digit kills in 23 matches this season and led TCU in kills eight times.
Gibson, who tallied 11 double-doubles this season, recorded a career-high 23 kills in TCU's 3-1 win over UCF on Oct. 27. She then followed it up with a career-best 20 digs against Iowa State on Nov. 3.
Both Frogs were crucial in TCU's postseason run. Parra (23) and Gibson (17) tallied 15+ kills in TCU's 3-1 win over No. 22 Florida State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament (Dec. 1). Against No. 9 Arkansas, Parra recorded her 13th double-double of the season (14 kills, 12 digs) while Gibson tallied her 11th double-double (12 kills, 10 digs).
Gibson and Parra are the 13th and 14th players in program history to earn AVCA All-Region accolades. Out of those 14, three have come in the past two years of head coach Jason Williams' tenure. Last season, Audrey Nalls garnered AVCA All-Southwest Region honors as well.
