
TCU Upsets No. 22 Florida State to Advance to NCAA Second Round

Melanie Parra recorded a team-leading 23 kills in the four-set win
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – TCU advanced to its second consecutive Round of 32 in the NCAA Tournament with a 3-1 win over No. 22 Florida State on Friday night in Barnhill Arena.
TCU was led by Melanie Parra, who tallied 23 kills at a .304 clip along with 11 digs. Jalyn Gibson (17) and Audrey Nalls (13) also tallied double-digit kills in the win.
The Rundown
The Frogs got off to a solid start in the first set, but the Seminoles began to pull away and took a 12-9 lead to force a TCU timeout. The Seminoles extended their lead to 21-15, but the Frogs began one of their greatest set comebacks of the season. Kills from Audrey Nalls and Sarah Sylvester made it a 21-18 contest, and two Florida State attack errors made it a 22-20.
Tied at 23-all, the Seminoles took a 24-23 lead, but the Frogs capped the match with a 3-0 scoring to take the first set, 26-24. TCU ended the set on a 6-1 scoring to clinch the win.
Despite falling in the second set, the Frogs' response in the third set was stellar. A service ace from Nalls, along with a kill apiece from Jalyn Gibson and Melanie Parra, gave TCU an early 4-0 lead in the set. Tied at 4-4, the Frogs went on a 5-0 scoring run to take a 9-4 lead and force a Florida State timeout.
TCU's momentum never faded throughout the rest of the set. Three consecutive kills from Gibson gave TCU a 19-13 lead. Gibson continued her tear in the third set, tallying another kill to give TCU a 21-16 advantage. Leading 24-18, Parra clinched the set win for the Frogs with an ace.
Gibson tallied an incredible nine kills in the second alone and hit 1.000 for the set.
The fourth set was a back-and-forth battle in the beginning with the Seminoles leading early on. Trailing 12-10, the Frogs went on a 5-2 run, highlighted by three kills from Parra, to lead 15-14. TCU continued to shine and kills from Nalls and Parra extended the Frog lead to 20-16.
The Seminoles came back and tied the set at 22-all and had set point at 24-23, but TCU scored the final three points to clinch the four-set victory at 26-24.
This is the second straight season that TCU has upset a seeded team in the NCAA First Round in four sets. Last year, the Frogs defeated eighth-seeded Washington 3-1.
