Pinnington advances in singles; Gorzny and Vives oust reigning doubles champs
SAN DIEGO – TCU inched ever closer to producing its first individual national champion in more than 40 years on Friday at the Barnes Tennis Center.
Jack Pinnington advanced to the singles semifinals of the ITA National Fall Championships while Sebastian Gorzny and Pedro Vives rolled into the final four of the grand finale of fall tennis in doubles.
Pinnington, the ITA No. 26 singles player, downed No. 61 Pablo Masjuan of UC Santa Barbara in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. Gorzny and Vives followed with the highest-ranked win of their two-year tenure as partners, as the 13th-ranked duo sent off No. 12 Robert Cash and JJ Tracy of Ohio State via a 6-4, 6-3 margin.
Pinnington, 11-2 in singles this fall, is the first Horned Frog to reach the semifinals of the ITA National Fall Championships since David Pate won it in 1982.
TCU has now placed a doubles tandem in the national semifinals for three consecutive fall seasons with Gorzny and Vives' performance. Vives and Lui Maxted reached the penultimate round in 2021 as freshman. Maxted and Sander Jong finished as finalists the following year, becoming TCU's first-ever national fall runner-up.
Pinnington's win over Masjuan was his fifth ranked win during the fall season and fourth in straight sets.
Gorzny and Vives improved their career doubles record to 29-9. They also became the first doubles tandem to defeat a team from Ohio State at the ITA National Fall Championships in three years. Tracy won the tournament in 2022 while Cash claimed the crown in 2021.
TCU's tournament record stands at 10-2 following Friday's action. Vives fell to No. 17 Micah Braswell of Texas, 6-2, 6-3, in a rematch of the ITA Texas Regional Championship. No. 38 Duncan Chan and Lui Maxted suffered a 6-4, 6-1 defeat to Washington's 16th-ranked pair of Cesar Bouchelaghem and Dzianis Zharyn.
Pinnington moves on to face No. 81 Jack Anthrop of Ohio State at 1 p.m. CT on Saturday for a ticket to the finale. Braswell and Tracy, No. 12 nationally, line up on the corresponding side of the bracket.
Gorzny and Vives' semifinal task is a 3 p.m. match vs. Old Dominion's Connor Van Schalkwyk and Corie Van Schalkwyk. A victory pits the duo against either the Husky tandem or No. 2 Ozan Baris and Max Sheldon (Michigan State) in Sunday's championship.
