TCU improves tournament record to 8-0; qualifies five athletes for quarterfinals
SAN DIEGO – A quarter of the ITA National Fall Championships quarterfinals bracket belongs to the Horned Frogs.
TCU won four matches – two singles, two doubles – in the round of 16 on Thursday at the Barnes Tennis Center. The Horned Frogs improved their tournament record to a nation's-best 8-0 and qualified an NCAA-leading five athletes to Friday's quarterfinals. TCU is also the only program to place multiple singles players and doubles teams within the final eight.
Pedro Vives and Jack Pinnington accounted for TCU's singles triumphs to begin the program's second day in southern California.
Vives, No. 82 in the ITA singles rankings, outclassed No. 29 Samir Banerjee of Stanford, 6-4, 6-0. The 26th-ranked Pinnington then took the stage, where he bettered No. 10 Alexander Bernard (Ohio State) in a 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 victory.
Vives and Banerjee played to a 4-4 gridlock in set one, only for Vives to turn the match completely on its ear. The junior broke Banerjee and in turn won eight consecutive games to close the show.
Pinnington won three of his final six games vs. Bernard on receive. Bernard was the highest-ranked player remaining in the 32-player bracket before his ouster at Pinnington's hands.
TCU followed with a pair of convincing doubles triumphs. No. 38 Duncan Chan and Lui Maxted picked up their sixth win in their last seven tries behind a 6-3, 6-4 win over Alejandro Gandini and Matthew Lanahan of Creighton. Gorzny and Vives, tabbed the nation's preseason No. 13 doubles tandem, were too much for Memphis' Pablo Alemany and Charlie Berry in the nightcap. The TCU duo, now 28-9 as doubles partners, rolled over the Tiger pair, 6-3, 6-1.
Pinnington's quarterfinal tilt pits him against No. 61 Pablo Masjuan of UC Santa Barbara, with the winner advancing to battle either No. 81 Jack Anthrop (Ohio State) or Alvin Tudorixa (South Florida) for a spot in Sunday's final. Pinnington's clash with Masjuan is slated for a noon CT first serve.
Vives faces Texas' 17th-ranked Micah Braswell at noon in a rematch of the ITA Texas Regional final on Oct. 24. Braswell got the better of Vives, 6-4, 6-4, in their meeting 10 days ago. No. 12 JJ Tracy of Ohio State and Cornell's Radu Papoe line up opposite the Big 12 rivals on the corresponding half of the bracket.
Braswell is one of just two players to hand Vives a defeat since September. Vives, originally from Palma de Mallorca, Spain, has won nine of his last 11 matches, the last four of which have come against ITA top-40 foes. Vives' second-half surge in 2023 has him ranked fourth among all active collegians in the UTR Rating at 14.11.
Pinnington's form has been every bit as good as Vives' this fall. He improved his fall singles record to 10-2 overall and 4-2 against ranked opponents. Eight of his wins have been in straight sets. Bernard represented the third ITA top-15 victory Pinnington has bagged in four tournaments.
Chan and Maxted, now 11-4 as partners, draw the assignment of No. 16 Cesar Bouchelaghem and Dzianis Zharyn of Washington.
Maxted has now advanced to the doubles quarterfinals of the ITA National Fall Championships for three consecutive seasons. He and Vives reached the semifinals in 2021. Maxted teamed with Sander Jong the following year in a memorable fall punctuated by runner-up finishes at the ITA Texas Regional and ITA National Fall Championships.
Gorzny and Vives' next task is a meeting with Ohio State's top doubles team in No. 19 Robert Cash and JJ Tracy.
