Gorzny, Pinnington and Vives set for main draw
TULSA, Okla. – Lui Maxted, Pedro Vives and Tomas Jirousek earned singles wins over Power Five conference foes to conclude qualifying on Tuesday at the ITA All-American Championships.
The trio of triumphs swelled TCU's qualifying victories tally to seven through two days of competition at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
Maxted got the day started with a bang for the Horned Frogs. Ranked No. 123 nationally, the junior swept Texas A&M's JC Roddick 7-5, 6-4 to collect his team-leading seventh win of the fall. The result marked the second time in 2023 Maxted gained the upper hand on Roddick. The two squared off on court six during TCU's 4-0 win over the Aggies in the round of 32 of the NCAA Tournament. Maxted led Roddick 6-3, 5-5 at the time of TCU's clinch.
The win advanced Maxted to the qualifying round of 32 and within a win of a main draw berth. Maxted narrowly fell to Wake Forest's Luciano Tacchi 4-6, 6-7 [2-7].
Vives garnered the most significant win of the national championship event thus far for the Frogs. The nation's No. 82 singles player, Vives ousted Baylor's Zsombor Velcz in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, picking up his first ranked win of the fall in the process. Vives broke Velcz, No. 114 in the ITA singles rankings, twice in set three on his way to an insurmountable 4-0 lead.
In Vives' second contest of the day, he dropped a decision to USC's nationally-ranked Wojtek Marek. Vives lost 1-6, 5-7 to the 63rd-ranked Marek.
Jirousek picked up a consolation victory at the expense of the Demon Deacons' Matthew Thomson via a 7-5, 6-3 straight set win.
In TCU's lone doubles match of the afternoon, No. 38 Duncan Chan and Maxted fell to Columbia's 53rd-ranked tandem of Nicolas Kotzen and Max Westphal, 5-7, 6-3, [4-10].
Vives returns to action on Wednesday in the 32-team main doubles draw alongside sophomore Sebastian Gorzny. He and Gorzny, ranked No. 13 in the preseason ITA doubles rankings, will battle Tulsa's Alex Okonkwo and Callum Gale in the opening round.
Gorzny and Jack Pinnington automatically qualified for the main singles draw. The 26th-ranked Pinnington draws No. 13 Jeffrey von der Schulenburg in a rematch from the Battle in the Bay Classic in September. Pinnington battered Virginia's No. 3 singles player 6-0, 7-5 in the quarterfinals on his way to his highest-ranked collegiate win. Gorzny, No. 43 nationally, is set to face No. 11 Karlis Ozolins of Illinois.
