Gorzny, Pennington and Vives advance to Thursday's second round
TULSA, Okla. – TCU delivered a dominant start to its main draw run at the ITA All-American Championships on Thursday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
Sebastian Gorzny, Jack Pinnington and Pedro Vives teamed up to give the Horned Frogs three opening round victories at the fall season's first national championship event.
Gorzny and Pinnington kicked off the morning with a pair of top-15 singles victories to punch their tickets to Thursday's round of 32.
Gorzny walloped No. 11 Karlis Ozolins of Illinois, 6-2, 6-2, earning the highest-ranked win of his college career. Ranked No. 43 nationally, Gorzny is now 24-4 overall in singles play and 7-2 in fall invitationals in his TCU tenure.
Pinnington was every bit as dominant. He faced Virginia's 13th-ranked Jeffrey von der Schulenburg in a rematch of their quarterfinal tilt at the Battle in the Bay Classic on Sept. 22. Pinnington, the nation's No. 26 singles player, claimed their first meeting 6-0, 7-5. Pinnington made even more efficient work of von der Schulenburg the second time around. Pinnington rolled past von der Schulenburg 6-2, 6-2 and claimed his third win over a ranked opponent this fall.
In doubles, Gorzny and Vives, the nation's No.13 ranked tandem, notched a come-from-behind win at the expense of Tulsa's Callum Gale and Alex Okonwo. After dropping the first set, 4-6, Gorzny and Vives claimed set two by a 7-5 margin, then rolled past the Golden Hurricane duo 10-6 in a decisive pro set tiebreaker.
Duncan Chan and Lui Maxted picked up two qualifying victories in doubles to earn a wild card onto the main draw. The duo, who checked in at No. 38 in the preseason ITA rankings, impressed even in defeat. Playing their first tournament together, Chan and Maxted drew No. 10 Michael Heller and Andrew Zhang of Duke. Chan and Maxted defeated the graduate student pair 6-4 before dropping sets two and three, 3-6, [6-10].
Pinnington is set to face Illinois' Kenta Miyoshi with a spot in Friday's round of 16 at stake. Gorzny will battle No. 24 Etienne Donnet of Louisville. Following his singles match, Gorzny and Vives face Wake Forest's Holden Koons and Dhakshineswar Suresh.
