Horned Frogs Punch Four Tickets to ITA Texas Regional Semifinals

Vives defeats top overall seed Pierre Yves-Bailly in straight sets
FORT WORTH – TCU and Texas were the top-two men's tennis teams throughout 2023, so in a way, it was inevitable their paths would cross in the final rounds of the ITA Texas Regional.
Four of the Horned Frogs' five quarterfinal matches were opposite the Longhorns on Sunday at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
TCU won both of its doubles tilts while Pedro Vives ousted top overall seed and 16th-ranked Pierre Yves-Bailly in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4, in the highlight of the morning. Vives and Sebastian Gorzny, ranked No. 13 nationally, breezed past Texas' Cleeve Harper and Evin McDonald, 8-4, to register TCU's first doubles win. The 18th-ranked tandem of Duncan Chan and Lui Maxted then bettered Julian Alonso and Tomas Jirousek via an identical score in an all-TCU battle.
The Horned Frogs are the lone program with semifinal representation in both singles and doubles. TCU is also one of just two teams alongside UTSA with four players competing in Monday's semifinal matches and doubles final.
TCU improved its main draw record to 21-7 and augmented its tournament win tally to 27.
Gorzny and Vives, the tournament's highest-ranked doubles pair, broke twice in their wire-to-wire win. They claimed the match's first game on receive and firmly put Texas on its heels with a second break while leading 5-3. Gorzny and Vives won all four deuce points.
Entering their second season as partners, Gorzny and Vives are now 24-9 overall and 4-0 vs. Texas when partnered together.
Alonso and Jirousek's quarterfinal run came as a surprise, as the freshman and fifth year senior had never competed together prior to Thursday's round of 32. Chan and Maxted sported a 5-2 record entering the match.
The Horned Frog dual saw both teams hold on serve through the first six games before Chan and Maxted broke to take a 4-3 lead and assume control of the match. Chan and Maxted earned one final break point while leading 6-4 to effectively sew up the match.
Vives and Yves-Bailly's clash lived up to its pre-match billing. Vives, No. 82 in the ITA singles rankings, holds the fourth-highest UTR among all collegians at 14.11 while Yves-Bailly was the tournament's highest-ranked player.
Vives earned a crucial break point tied at 5-5 to take set one. He then scored an early break to go in front 4-3 in the second frame before serving out the match. The junior won his final 10 games on serve.
Yves-Bailly was the highest-ranked player Vives has defeated in his career and represents his first top-20 win.
TCU appeared all-but certain to have two singles players in the semifinals before an untimely injury halted its plans. No. 26 Jack Pinnington led the 45th-ranked Jonah Braswell 6-2, 5-2 and was serving for the match at 40-30 but sprained his ankle on a cross-court slice in a long rally. With Pinnington clearly compromised, Braswell took a set two tiebreaker via a 7-2 margin and claimed a 6-1 decision in the third-and-final frame.
Gorzny fell to No. 17 Micah Braswell, 3-6, 2-6, to conclude singles play for TCU.
TCU now stands two victories away from sending multiple players to the ITA National Fall Championships for the third consecutive season. Singles and doubles champions and finalists receive automatic berths to fall tennis' grand finale. Maxted finished as a doubles finalist alongside Sander Jong in 2022 while Vives and Juan Carlos Aguilar claimed the doubles crown the year prior.
Vives meets No. 38 Tadeas Paroulek (Baylor) at 9 a.m. on Monday.
TCU's tandems sit on opposite sides of the doubles bracket. Chan and Maxted are set to face Jackson Ross and Garrett Skelly of UTSA at 9 a.m.. Gorzny and Vives will meet the Roadrunners' Alan Magadan and Tomas Pinho following Vives' singles clash with Paroulek.
The doubles final is slated for a 2 p.m. or 3 p.m. first serve. The singles final takes place on Tuesday.
