TCU went three-for-three in the round of 16 in double and pocketed seven singles wins
FORT WORTH – TCU inched ever closer to booking a jet to San Diego for the ITA National Fall Championships on Saturday.
The Horned Frogs collected 10 victories and secured six combined singles and doubles berths in the quarterfinals of the ITA Texas Regional, held from Thursday-Tuesday at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
TCU went three-for-three in the round of 16 in doubles, then pocketed seven singles wins in the second and third rounds of singles play.
The 13th-ranked tandem of Sebastian Gorzny and Pedro Vives walloped Luke Casper and JC Roddick of Texas A&M, 8-2, to commence TCU's commanding home court showcase. No. 38 Duncan Chan and Lui Maxted followed suit with an 8-3 triumph over Emilen Burnel and Sam Whitehead (UTRGV). Julian Alonso and Tomas Jirousek then capped a sterling morning, pulling an 8-4 upset of ninth-seeded Iannis Fernandes and Togan Tokac of Texas A&M.
TCU became the lone program to send three doubles teams to the quarterfinals with Saturday's collective showing.
The Horned Frogs' sheer mastery of the state guaranteed TCU a doubles pair in Monday's semifinals. Alonso and Jirousek, playing together for the first time ever, will battle Chan and Maxted at 9 a.m. on Sunday for a spot in the final four. Gorzny and Vives draw the task of Cleeve Harper and Evin McDonald of Texas simultaneously.
All TCU matches will be staged on the purple courts.
In singles, TCU went seven-for-nine in main draw matches. Gorzny, Vives and Jack Pinnington all earned their quarterfinal caps behind two victories apiece.
Pinnington, the ITA No. 26 singles player, had the most efficient day of the trio. He eased by Joao Sasso of Incarnate Word, 6-4, 6-2, to claim his first of two singles victories. An upset of Harper on Pinnington's side of the 64-man bracket pitted him against Joan Torres Espinosa of UT Arlington. Pinnington maximized the favorable matchup, making quick work of Espinosa, 6-1, 6-2.
The London native will meet No. 45 Jonah Braswell on Sunday.
Vives' afternoon followed a similar narrative. The sophomore, who holds the fourth-highest UTRT (14.11) among all collegians, routed SMU's Jerry Barton, 6-2, 6-3, in the round of 32. He then downed Baylor's top freshmen, Louis Bowden, taking a 6-4, 6-2 decision.
Vives, ranked 82nd nationally, forced a barnburner of a matchup on Sunday with his pair of wins. Vives is set to face the tournament's top overall seed and national No. 16, Pierre-Yeves Bailly of Texas in the quarterfinals.
The 43rd-ranked Gorzny bagged TCU's most noteworthy wins. He outclassed Texas Tech's Tyler Stewart, 6-3, 6-3, then downed No. 114 Zsombor Velcz of Baylor in a 7-5, 5-7, 7-5 slugfest.
TCU is 4-0 in matches involving the Bears this tournament.
The final Horned Frog singles win belonged to Maxted, who bettered Baylor's Brayden Michna, 6-7 [2-7], 6-1, 6-4 in the round of 32. He led No. 38 Tadeas Paroulel – Baylor's top singles player – 6-2, 4-5, before being forced to withdraw due to injury.
