FORT WORTH – TCU handled its business in the opening rounds of the main draw of the ITA Texas Regional on Friday.
Seven Horned Frogs produced eight combined singles and doubles victories on the friendly confines of the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
Five players punched their tickets to the round of 32 in singles via convincing sweeps.
Lui Maxted made quick work of Texas Tech's Jonas Gundacker, 6-1, 6-1, to register TCU's first singles victory.
Pedro Vives soon followed with a 6-2, 6-1 defeat of Emilio Vila of Incarnate Word.
Jack Pinnington, ranked No. 26 nationally, then ousted Abilene Christian's Cesar Barranquero via a 6-3, 6-2 margin.
Sebastian Gorzny delivered TCU's most dominant singles display of the afternoon. The 43rd-raned Gorzny outclassed UIW's Antoine Martin-Thiriat, 6-1, 6-0. Gorzny won eight straight games to close the books on his match.
Freshman Julian Alonso continued his coming out party and gave TCU its fifth-and-final singles triumph. Alonso bettered Lamar's Max Amling in a 6-4, 6-3 straight set win. He grew stronger as his match progressed. Alonso broke twice in the conclusive second set to build a 4-1 edge. Alonso notched two qualifying singles victories on Thursday to punch his ticket to the main draw.
Alonso's singles victory was his second of the day and fourth in the tournament. He and Tomas Jirousek secured a spot in the round of 16 in doubles behind an 8-7 {9-7] back-and-fourth win at the expense of Baylor's Louis Bowden and Christopher Frantzen.
TCU's pair of ranked doubles teams made especially quick work of their opponents, giving TCU three doubles tandems in Saturday's third round. Gorzny and Vives, No. 13 in the preseason ITA rankings, won five consecutive games during an 8-2 win against Iannis Fernandes and Nicolas Trebuchet of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Maxted and Chan got off the court shortly thereafter in a wire-to-wire 8-3 win over Abiline Christian's Mihaly Deli and Benjamin McDonald.
Maxted leads TCU with 12 combined victories this fall. His doubles record stands at 7-2 following his performance with Chan on Friday.
Chan and Maxted are now 4-2 as doubles partners.
Pinnington continues to lead TCU in siningles winning percentage (.857) in 2023 on the strength of a 6-1 record. Five of his singles wins have been in straight sets
Alonso has now won five consecutive matches dating back to his collegiate debut at the US College Cup Invitational in Torreon, Mexico.
