Chan, Maxted and Vives move within a match of main draw berths
TULSA, Okla. – TCU took care of business on day one of qualifying at the ITA All-American Championships on Monday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
The Horned Frogs claimed two victories apiece in singles and doubles, putting three players within a win of main draw berths.
Lui Maxted helped account for three of TCU's four triumphs. Maxted, No. 123 in the ITA singles rankings, got the day started with a 6-4, 6-4 defeat of Middle Tennessee State's Leo Raquin in the qualifying round of 128.
The junior followed up the straight set singles win with a pair of doubles sweeps alongside Duncan Chan. The duo first defeated Alex Bulte and Louis Pourroy of Florida State, 7-5, 6-2, in the qualifying round of 64. Chan and Maxted followed suit with a 7-5, 6-4 takedown of Jay Friend and Nick Lagaev. The pair of victories were Maxted and Chan's first as doubles partners. He and Chan, a freshman from Markham, Ontario, were tabbed the nation's No. 38 doubles tandem in the preseason ITA rankings.
Maxted and Chan boast team-leading 6-2 combined overall records this fall.
Pedro Vives rounded out TCU's opening day showing at the first of two national fall championship events with a 6-4, 6-4 defeat of Utah's Berk Bugarikj. The nation's No. 82 singles player, Vives is as hot as any player nationally. He has won 10 of his last 12 matches since Sept. 3 when including ATP results. Vives currently boasts the fourth-highest universal tennis rating (14.11) among all active collegians.
Maxted moves on to meet JC Roddick of Texas A&M in the qualifying round of 64 on Tuesday. He last battled Roddick during TCU's 4-0 win over the Aggies in the round of 32 of the 2023 NCAA Tournament. Maxted led Roddick 6-3, 5-5 at the time of the Horned Frogs' clinch.
Vives draws No. 114 Zsombor Velcz of Baylor with a spot in the 64-man main draw on the line.
Maxted and Chan are set to face Arizona's Jay Friend and Nick Lagaev in the qualifying round of 16 in doubles.
The Horned Frogs will qualify a Big 12 era record five players to the main draw of the ITA All-American Championships with a victory from Chan and Maxted on Tuesday.
TCU came three points shy of a perfect day one doubles showing. Playing together for the first time, Tomas Jirousek and Pinnington battled Holden Koons and Dhakshineswar Suresh to a narrow 4-6, 6-1, [10-7] tiebreaker loss. The match marked the first time Jirousek, a fifth year senior, has played doubles collegiately since 2021.
Jirousek fell in singles to No. 79 Magnus Johnson of Florida, 4-6, 6-4, 0-6.
Pinnington has already secured a spot in the main singles draw, which begins on Wednesday. He'll be joined by fellow sophomore Sebastian Gorzny, who was a main draw selection in both singles and doubles. Pinnington and Gorzny boast respective ITA singles rankings of No. 26 and No. 43. Gorzny will do battle in the 32-team doubles main draw alongside Vives.
