Freshmen Alonso, Chan and Quirijns collect two wins apiece
FORT WORTH – TCU defended its home turf on day one of the ITA Texas Regional on Thursday at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
Playing host to its third ITA-sanctioned fall invitational since 2017, the Horned Frogs pocketed six qualifying singles victories and punched three tickets to Friday's 64-man main draw.
Freshmen Duncan Chan, Julian Alonso and Kaj Quirijns did the damage, and in the process, earned their first wins on the purple courts.
Chan took the court for his opening-round match shortly after 9 a.m. and departed before the clock turned another hour. The Markham, Ontario native hung consecutive bagels against Pedro Sasso of UT Arlington in a 6-0, 6-0 boat race to put the Horned Frogs on the board.
He then faced Antoine Martin-Thiriat (Incarnate Word) in the second round. Chan outlasted his Cardinal counterpart in a back-and-forth battle. He took set one 7-5. The two then alternated games to a 6-6 gridlock. Chan broke midway through the decisive tiebreaker on his way to a 7-6 [7-4] victory and main draw berth.
Chan moved into the team-lead in fall victories (nine) following Thursday's affair. His singles record stands at 4-1.
Alonso joined his classmate on the sweep train. He grinded past Eduardo Nunez Del Prado Flores of Prairie View A&M, 7-6 [7-2], 6-2 in the first round. The Spaniard then turned in arguably the most noteworthy result of the afternoon. He bettered Texas A&M's Grant Lothringer via a 6-0, 6-4 margin, ousting the qualifying draw's No. 2 seed in the process.
If Chan and Alonso were the epitome of efficient, Quirijns embodied grit. Originally from Switzerland, Quirijns battled out of 1-0 holes in both of his wins.
Quirijns dropped a 2-6 decision in set one of his first round match vs. Eduardo Morais (Rice). The score could easily have been flipped. Three of Quirijns' game defeats came on deuce points. He flipped the scrip in the final two frames, hustling past Morais 6-4, 6-4.
In the second round, Quirijns met the Cardinals' Tomas Reche, who was awarded a first round bye. Quirijns fell 3-6 in the opening set, but came out on top 6-4 in set two and force a decisive third frame. He had match point on Reche at 5-4, only to drop the next two games. Quirijns forced a tiebreaker on receive. A topsy-turvy match continued, as Quirijns and Reche competed to a 5-5 standstil, with each player recording two points on receive. Quirijns pestered Reche into consecutive errors on the match's final two points to sew up his main draw appearance.
Chan moves on to meet Trinity Greer of Rice at 1 p.m. on Friday in the first round of the main draw. Quirijns draws the assignment of UTSA's Tomas Pinho at 1:30 p.m. Alonso and Max Amling of Lamar will do battle at 1:45 p.m.
Chan and Alonso will also be in action in doubles, as they are partnered with Lui Maxted and Tomas Jirousek, respectively.
Friday's slate features two rounds of doubles, beginning at 9 a.m., before giving way to the round of 64 in singles.
The Horned Frogs have eight players in action. Jack Pinnington, Sebastian Gorzny and Pedro Vives all received main draw berths in both singles and doubles.
