TCU QB Named the Shaun Alexander Award Freshman of the Week
SOUTHAMPTON, Pa. -- The Maxwell Football Club has announced TCU quarterback Josh Hoover as the Shaun Alexander Award Freshman of the Week for his play in Saturday's 44-11 win over BYU.
The Shaun Alexander Award is presented annually to the nation's top freshman. Alexander was an All-America running back at Alabama before being selected the 2005 National Football League Most Valuable Player for the Seattle Seahawks.
A native of Heath, Texas, Hoover became the first Power Five quarterback with 400 yards passing and four touchdowns in his first career start since Anthony Gordon for Washington State against New Mexico State in 2019. He is also the first Big 12 signal caller to accomplish the feat since 2014 with Baylor's Seth Russell versus Northwestern State.
Hoover's 439 yards tied for 10th-most in a game at TCU and rank 10th nationally this season. He completed 37-of-58 passes.
The 439 yards passing were the most by a TCU quarterback in his first career start since Chandler Morris threw for 461 in a 30-28 win over Baylor in 2021. The four touchdown passes were the best by a Horned Frog in his first start since Casey Pachall's four at Baylor in 2011. It was also the most versus an FBS opponent since Max Duggan had four scoring tosses at Oklahoma in 2021.
The 37 completions and 58 attempts by Hoover were the highest total by a TCU quarterback since Pachall was 40-of-58 passing against West Virginia in 2013.
